You might consider getting puppy exercise pens. Some are usually available on Craigslist for a good price. I used one for a bird I was doctoring. I bought some bird netting and clipped it on the top of the pen to keep the hawks out.
Thanks so much to those who answered my post! The discovery of a dead hen in my coop was such a shock. She had been molting hard but seemed otherwise healthy. I found her in the nest box, approximately 3 PM, I had just seen her a few hours earlier. I only had nine hens so each one pretty much...
One of my 18 month old chickens has died from some sort of respiratory ailment . All my other birds are now showing signs of discharge from the nose. They haven't started head shaking yet but that is what I saw with the one that died. They have never been out of the run or coop. Please point me...
We had a hawk attack about 10:30 am one day while my German Shorthaired Pointer was outdoors watching the one chicken that was free ranging. The dog was not in the same fenced area as the chicken. I was indoors but in a room that was very close to the action. The dog started seriously barking so...
Wow! Now you have an answer to the boy not getting it. I still think he will catch on more once he settles in with you. Seems like he is learning already.
I crate train my dogs. It starts even before they go to new homes. That was not done properly before you got him but you can train him eventually.
The happy peeing is something they will grow out of. Ignore him when he does it and don't make eye contact. Put him someplace safe while you clean...
Yes, the dry heat is why they work so well. I found the mister at Home depot, its a plastic tubing shaped like a cobra curled. I placed a cinder block on the bottom to keep the birds from knocking it over. It really works well with the box fan that distributes the mist.
We live in Phoenix Arizona. Our coop and run were designed with the heat in mind from the start. The coop is super ventilated. I have most the north facing coop wall made to be opened during the hot part of the day. Above the walls and below the roof it is open all the way around. The run is...
We live in Phoenix, this is our second year with chickens. We lost some the first year to heat at 118 degrees. Even the ice blocks and cold water couldn't overcome the heat stress. We moved them indoors for a while until we had our new coop and run finished. The new run and coop have a sand...
We had terriers for 18 years and never had a rat problem. Rats are smart enough to avoid yards with terriers. My next door neighbor had nests of them under her shed, while our shed remained undisturbed. Then our last terrier died of old age. We had a rat problem instantly. Here in Arizona, roof...
Killing the Bobcat will only allow other predators to come in. Get a dog that can protect your flock should anything get near them. You will probably have to raise up a dog to fit the situation. If you can build a run that the birds can safely be kept in while the dog is trained, it would be...
I feed spinach to my flock nearly every day along with other green vegetables. They absolutely love the spinach. It is relatively inexpensive and one of those standard bags is good for at least five days with a flock of ten. I don't give them but a handful and it really does the trick for orange...
