    I have four barred rock hens, but the one has a different comb. Is it still a hen? They are all 5 months old.

    Sure way to tell the difference between a rooster and a hen

    I watched a video on telling the difference, and one of the main ways is to look at the feet. If it is a rooster, it will have talons. Only roosters have them, hens don't. A talon looks like a fourth toe growing out the side of the leg.

    My chickens have been total free range, with added scratch. During the winter, is scratch enough, or should crumbles be included as necessary? I have 13 laying hens. I've been told that the scratch is enough, the eggs will be fine.

    I have 13 hens that are totally free range. I give them scratch, and was told that they have enough protein from the bugs and critters they eat. But come winter, do they have to be supplemented with another grain? They will begin laying shortly.
