I have a backyard coop with 5 hens, and would like to have a few more. Our village's maximum is 8, so I can't get more than 3. I know they need to crowd together for warmth,so am I asking for trouble raising only 3?
Last week the temps went down to 15 degrees, and in the morning, my RIR was dead on the floor of the run underneath the coop. There were no signs of stress or injury of any kind.
I always check to see if they are all in the roost, but it is possible I counted them wrong and she was stuck...
I am going through my first winter as a chicken owner and recently lost a chicken, getting me down to 5 hens. We'd like to replace her with one or two more hens.
