Hen has stopped laying, now gagging?

We have a cream legbar, almost a year old, that has not laid in about a month. She appeared to be molting, plus it's been very hot here in Texas, so I was not too concerned. But last night she was doing this thing where every few seconds she stretched out her neck and stuck out her tongue, as if...

2 Mystery Chicks from MPC Rare Breeds, Guesses?

I ordered 6 chicks from My Pet Chicken this year, and 2 are from the "Assorted Rare Breeds". The first one I think is either a Barnevelder (except it's chest isn't that white, more grey/tan) or maybe a Golden Laced Wyandotte which looks more like it, but is not specifically in the list. Chick...

DFW Texas: 8 roosters need to go ASAP - cream legbar, Mille fleur leghorn, marans

We need to rehome our roosters immediately. A predator has killed over 20 of our hens over 3 separate attacks and we give up. I need them gone by the end of the month but sooner is better so they don't get killed too. 2 crested cream legbars 1 Mille fluer leghorn 1 frizzle Cochin 2 blue...

Crooked Beak on 4.5 week old chick

I just noticed today that one of my Cream Legbar girls has a crooked beak. I've spent a lot of time with them so I don't see how I didn't see this before, but it doesn't seem like the kind of thing that happens overnight... What causes this?? Is it genetic and it's always been that way, or could...

How long after a predator attack can we expect to be egg-less?

I have two 1.5 year old hens that survived a predator attack. (We think a dog). One had a hurt eye which seems better now, the other was much worse off and still has a limp and can't fly, but both are eating and drinking, and moving around the yard. (They are now inside our 6.5 ft privacy fence)...

Help - we found a baby bird that looks hurt

We were just closing up everything for the night when my husband saw a baby bird in the backyard. It looked like one of our cream legbar babies so he went to catch it, and I told him that wasnt ours - but it seems a little messed up. It's smaller than a 3 week old chick, not fully feathered, and...

What did this? 6 chickens dead, 2 injured, all bodies found

It tore a whole in 2x4 welded wire, two layers of wire. Tiny bit of red fur, only evidence of an animal. Found 2 dead and partially eaten, 4 just dead, 2 with feathers pulled out, possible a broken leg.

Found 2 of my 6 week olds dead this am

I'm not sure why... They were not stiff yet so I guess it was very recent. They were in separate areas of the coop but I did find several very small puddles of blood inside the coop. Couldn't see any on the chicks. Any ideas? If the weather hasn't been so nice lately I would worry it was the...

Sexing at 2 weeks by comb - my guesses

I have 18 chicks who will be 2 weeks in 2 days. I got a chance to take some good photos of them today - I have these three black olive eggers and i'm comparing them to my color-sexed chicks to compare their development, but all I'm guessing based on right now is the comb. Just wanted to see...

    Chicks keep soaking themselves!

I have a bunch of chicks that are 5 days old now. They keep huddling under the waterer and getting soaking wet and then piling up together in a big wet pile of baby chicks! What the heck? They have plenty of room to be NOT under the waterer.

    Integrating two groups

I have a trio of Cream Legbars that is about 6-8 weeks old, and two more trios I just got as babies. Right now the older ones are with another 5 chickens the same age. When the babies are old enough I want to move the 4 younger hens and the older 2 hens and 1 roo into one pen. What age would be...

    Chicks!

Who doesn't love baby chick photos? :) I got a great box of chicks from a member on here, they arrived yesterday and are SUPER CUTE. I forgot just how tiny day old chicks are, since the last several I bought were 2+ weeks old. It's amazing how much they grow in a few days! I got 18 chicks...

3 month old Pullet eating oyster shell?

I thought chickens wouldn't eat the oyster shell unless they needed more calcium? Isn't it too early for her to be taking extra calcium? We have a big feeder with a feed labeled "starter-grower-layer" and a separate container of oyster shell.

10 baby marans & americaunas + 3 older cuckoo marans (Loads of pics :))

I have a bunch of new babies, I'm curious what you guys think on their sexes. I have an idea on a few, and I've put legbands on my suspected roos. Either way I'll be fine with them, I picked the ones I thought were prettiest and we will keep them all :) So no need to say sorry on the roos ;)...

Can a raccoon open a carabiner?

Title says it all ;) Putting a new latch on the coop door, trying to decide if a latch like this with a carabiner instead of an actual padlock will be secure enough. Thoughts? What about barrel bolts?

    It's a great birthday - the story of why I'm naming a rooster. ;)

First of all, I don't believe in naming livestock, we have one hen that has a name because she's the only one we kept out of our first batch (one died, 3 were roosters.) Now we are so fond of her she will live out her life with us. So we agreed no names for the rest of the livestock. As my...

Why do fertile eggs cost more than chicks?

I've seen a lot of ads and sites selling fertile eggs for hatching, and they seem to cost more than baby chicks do - what's up with that??

    Our new tractor

We just finished our second chicken tractor. 6x6x2 - built from reclaimed barn lumber and some donated lumber and pallets. We bought the hardware cloth. The bottom is 2x4 welded wire, to let them scratch the ground. The part the nesting boxes and food and water will go in is made from...

    New chickies :)

Picked up a bunch of new chickens from a nice lady a few hours away from me today. Got a bunch of marans, two americaunas, and a trio of cream legbars. I also got a slightly older frizzle roo. I think I accidentally picked a few more boys than I meant to but oh well... Ton of images coming :)
