What breed might have these characteristics...in order of priority?
1. Be cold hardy and lay through the winter
2. Good forager and alert
3. A moderate size frame
4. Interesting plumage and egg color
It may be my perfect bird!
Thanks for looking, Kevin
I have about 14 hens and a few too many roosters...3 Wellsummer, 2 Ameracaunas, 2 cream legbars .
I've noticed that the Ameracauna roos are destroying my hens..they seem to attack and pull feathers like crazy...so much more than the others...I'm a bit concerned...Is it because I have too...
Two of my 5 hens went broody this spring; an older Copper Maran and a yearling Wyandotte. The Wyandotte hatched out 3 but only one lived. The BCM didn't hatch any (my roo is a cripple and not too virile I suspect) so I cleaned out her nest last week. Out in the run I noticed that the BCM would...
I have 1 rooster and 6 hens. One broody hen disappeared onto a nest with 7 eggs. only 3 hatched...I broke the other 4 and none showed any sign of development...does this mean my Roo is not too potent?
I incubated 25 eggs: 8 from one mail order, 8 from another and 9 from another.
I got 6 live chicks and one live but impaired chick I had to cull.
5 of the live chicks came from one batch of 8
The batch of 9 gave me 1 impaired cull and 2 late stage arrests.the other 6 had no development at...
The last egg of this batch hatched at 23 days....but the chick flips around, mostly on its back with feet in the air and the neck bent back constantly chirping? any ideas?
My first incubation...Brinsea Octagon 20...loaded with 24 eggs: 8 Wellies, 8 Crested Cream Legbars and 8 Wheaton Ameracaunas.
24% humidity to day 18 and then 52 - 65%...it's all I could get, even with felt ect.
7 am Friday begins day 21....1st CL at 330pm. By the end of day 21, 7am this...
We had a hatch of 5 one week ago and I purchased 6 more recently. I have them in my large brooder separated by a screen. Mama with hers and the orphans all together. I would like to handle Mamas chicks, but she is wild when ever I get to close! Read lots of peck marks on my arms! I'm...
21 days ago I put my broody on a clutch of 13 eggs that I had collected over a week or 2. Today I found her with 4 chicks and a bunch of unhatched eggs. I thought she was done but she took the chicks and set back on the nest....Isn't that strange behavior?Do you think I may get a few more to...
I started out with 5 sexed chicks several years ago...all raised without a roo in the picture. Two years ago I introduced 4 pullets to the flock that were part of a straight run that also grew up with roos. Last year I placed some fertile eggs beneath a broody hen and hatched 2 female and 2...
One of my hens was sleeping in the nesting box the past few weeks. Yesterday while reaching under her to collect she barely moved. What was weird was that she was backwards in the box and another hen was in the same box with her facing the opposite direction. When I pulled her out I found all...
We hatched these from supposedly purebred fertile eggs. I think I have 2 pullets and 2 cockerels. One cockerel is the blue and buff one, the other is blue. The whitish one is a pullet I think. Are these good representative specimens of the breed? Can I breed them to each other? Thanks, Kevin
thinking of building a new tractor....I currently place a de-icer inside a 5 gal bucket in the winter...3 nipples in the bottom and it works pretty well...only fill once a week.
but im looking for other ideas...so im wondering how others contend with freezing temps but still use nipple...
