I have 12 chickens, 6 Red Sex Links and 6 Barred Rocks. They are now 6 months old. Tonight it is supposed to get to freezing temperatures. Are we supposed to put a heater in the coop? A heat lamp? Anything? The coop is well ventilated and we can close the door at night. They have not layed eggs...
My hens are just 3 months old and yesterday I found 3 eggs in one of the nests!!! Really??? This soon?? I thought they start laying at about 5-6 months???
They are Red Sex Links and Barred Rocks. The eggs are really small though, is it because they are still very young??
It is taking us forever to build this coop and run, we have so much going on. But we finally have the run frame up. Now we just have to put the fencing and finish the coop roof and paint it. Can't wait till it is done!!!
I LOVE my chickens!! I'm new to chickens and started with 6 Red Sex Links back in April, now I have 12, I added 6 Barred Rocks. I'm so loving my chickens! We just started building their run and can't wait to have it finished.
I love how curious they are LOL, yesterday I was filling up one of...
Yesterday I added six 3 weeks old Barred Rocks to my flock of six 5 weeks old Red Sex Links. They all seemed to get along but this morning I noticed my Reds were keeping my BRs from the feeder and water so I put another feeder and water on the other side of the coop and the poor BRs started...
I have convinced hubby to let me get 6 more chicks!!!! Now I'm trying to decide where to order them from. Meyer hatchery? myPetChicken? or Murray McMurray?? Which in your opinion is the better one? Best reputation?
I know I like Australorps, RIR and Buff Orpingtons, so I think I'm going to...
We finally put the chicks in their new coop last night, I think they loved it!! All that space. They even tried their new perch, although one of them kept flying up on it an missing the bar. LMAO
(Sorry, cellphone picture)
And here is a short video of them...
Ok, so my coop floor is 4x8 feet. Would it be too big of an area to use PDZ? Would it be too expensive, how much would I need to cover the whole floor?? Or should I just use Pine shavings?? I've heard so many good things about the PDZ that I would prefer that over the shavings as I understand it...
Well, hubby and I are no experts (no builders) but even though our coop isn't perfection, I think it is not too bad.
We still have a few things to do like finishing the roof, the coop floor (I think we are just going to paint it), adding perches, the coop door and painting it, but we hope to...
Well, we are building our coop after all. Just got back from Lowes, funny story...the guy from Lowes comes to help hubby get the studs down when all of a sudden he asks: "Is this to build a chicken coop?" LOL Hubby and I looked at each other like: "How the heck does he know?!" I say yes why? And...
My chicks are getting so big that I had to move them out of the cardboard box they were in. So now they are in one of our puppy crates.
Here is a video of them eating wheat bread, hubby insisted on having the light off so I don't think they could see the bread very well, normally when I do...
What do you do with your eggs? Hubby and I wanted chickens so we could have fresh eggs for ourselves and for our dogs. :) Now my whole family is getting in line for eggs as well and our chicks aren't even laying yet. LOL
But today I mentioned at work that I have chickens and all my co-workers...
I have 6 RSL chicks right now, but I really really want to get some Black Australorps and maybe some Buff Orpingtons. Does anyone have chick pictures of Black Australorps, or Buff Orpingtons? I want to see what they look like as babies.
I already told hubby I want to get 6 more chicks, either...
We plan on building a big run, something like 12 x 24 feet, but we are debating whether to put the coop inside or outside of the run. If we put it outside (and for those of you who have access to the coop from outside of the run), do the chickens not try to run out when you open the door????
We live on 5 acres, we breed and train German Shepherds and some of the dogs stay in outside kennels so even though we live in the country and know there are Foxes, Skunks, Racoons, etc. We have never seen them on our property or at least close enough because of the dogs, I'm sure that's why...
If so, do you have pictures to share?
What kind of changes did you make to it??
Did you have to insulate for the winter?
Did you cut vents? If so, how many are needed?
Are windows a must??
Thank you for all your help!
