    Using poultry nipples with ducks

Hello! I have a chicken coop with some very mellow breeds and would like to add a few of Metzer Farms hybrid layers, but I don't want puddles in the run. Is it possible to just let the ducks use the poultry nipples? Also, would standard layer feed for chickens work for the ducks? Thank you!

    Huge eggs!!

Holy Moses! My quail just layed two monster eggs, one 18 gram and the other 17 grams. They're supposed to be jumbo quail but they don't look any bigger than the standards I have that are the same age and laying at most a 12 gram egg here and there. Poor little gals were walking funny. What's...

Coturnix eggs have white film - normal?

My quail just started laying this week and about a third of all the eggs I'm gathering have a chalky white film and spots on top of the usual cream with brown splotches. It doesn't wipe off. I'm wondering if this is an indication of deficiency or just normal deviation. The birds are on 28%...

    Scalp injury

I have two quail who suffered head injuries during the night. Both are bloodied with feathers and skin missing but are up and walking around, eating and drinking normally. So far, there's no sign of the others pecking at the raw spots. My instinct is to avoid further trauma by catching them and...

    Jumbo coturnix sexing (pics)

Sorry about the blurry picture but the little buggers are twitchy. :) Do these look like males? They're five weeks and have both rusty coloring AND spots, gah!

    Grit consumption

I just installed a free choice bin of grit in the coop three days ago and put a nearly full bag of grit in it. I noticed this morning its all but gone. My girls are around two months and are on starter feed with very few treats. They have wood shavings in their run and some tall grass pokes...

    Age to sex jumbo coturnix

I bought 27 (theoretically) unsexed three week old quail. I've never had quail before but I don't think these are jumbos. Now, two weeks later, I checked and it looks like the 50/50 odds for getting hens was not lucky. I think I have 18 males. Is this just abysmally poor luck or is it possible...

    Sprouted mung beans causing diarrhea?

I decided to add some sprouts to my 2 month old chickens diet. I read that mung beans should grow at least five days before eating raw in order to neutralize a potentially unhealthy compound present in uncooked dried beans. I waited the appropriate amount of time and then began to offer about a...

    Fair price for male coturnix

I'm in Seattle and will have some extra males. I don't want to harvest, so I figured I'd just sell. They'll be six week old, fed organic, non-GMO feed. How much should I ask, do you think?

3 week old quail missing back feathers

I just got these little ones and inspected for mites or lice. I didn't see anything like that. It can't be overmating already can it? Thanks!

    Height for jumbo coturnix brooder

I'm picking up 25 two week old jumbos this weekend and had planned on putting them in the biggest box I have for a brooder. Its about four feet tall and I have a section of leftover cedar lattice fence that rests over the top to prevent escapees. Is this a risk for head injury in case of...

Feeders for cages with sloping floors

I'm building my quail pens soon and would love to hear what folks do for feeders. My pen is going to have solid sides and back, wire front, and a covered roll-out box all along the front. Thanks in advance for ideas!

Want to buy jumbo coturnix near Seattle

Hello all! I've never had quail and am ready to get started. Does anyone have 10-12 adult jumbo hens at the start of their laying they'd like to sell? Thanks!

    Feed clumping in galvanized feeder

I have a biig galvanized feeder that ought to keep my hens supplied with constant food for a week. Instead, the moisture in the air is apparently causing the food to clump at the bottom so that once the small amount of food in the tray has been eaten, that's all they have. The top of the feeder...

Welsumer behaving strangely, losing feathers, help?

I have a 9 month old Welsumer hen who just started losing a lot of feathers. Weirdest of all, they have mostly gone from her head and neck, stopping at a perfect line around her neck so that it looks like she got her head stuck in a contraption and backed herself out, removing all the feathers...

WL w/ pale comb, lethargic, eyes closing, head shaking, thin, watery crop, help?

She laid an egg yesterday and only today seemed off. She's usually really feisty but she's just been sitting in her coop all day. I gave the hens some leftover burger earlier yesterday. Wondering if she might have swallowed too big a bite and it's causing sour crop. I tried massaging her crop...

Swollen breasts, feathers sticking out, hard roundness, one dead hen already, help?

Several of my hens have a small hard swelling on their breasts, so much so that their feathers are sticking out away from their bodies. When I felt the lump on one, it was like she had swallowed a rock. The feed store gave me the wrong thing when I went in last, sawdust instead of shavings and...

Crop or gizzard in postmortem (not sure)

An apparently healthy hen dropped dead overnight so I decided to open her up. All looked normal until I got further up the body cavity and found a rock hard mass the approximate size and shape of an egg. It had a shiny whitish blue membrane over it but once cut opened was deep red in color...

Postmortem revealed impacted crop. Help knowing why?

My golden Sexlink appeared perfectly healthy two days ago but died suddenly last night. Upon examination, I found the crop to be rock hard, so I opened it up. It appeared to be full of dirt, assorted whole grains of wheat from scratch, and a few bits of oyster shell. Can anyone tell me why...

    Wow! Cayenne and ACV work!

I had read that giving hens a little ACV and cayenne in their water when they are slow to lay will speed things up and wowie kazowie, it's true! Within two days, I went from six eggs out of eleven pullets to nine eggs, keeping in mind that three of those nine hadn't laid their first egg until...
