I am passively searching for another d'uccle. I just love the one that I have, though she hasn't exactly warmed up to me unless I am throwing bread, and even then she keeps her distance. Anyway, I would like to get another one, but I don't have the time/money to incubate my own eggs, so I am...
I came home from work today to find my d'uccle running around the driveway and my buff orp squawking her head off still in the run. Not sure how the d'uccle got out, best guess is that she dug under the fence. Let the buff out and after 30 minutes of chasing the d'uccle around the two chickens...
I would like to introduce my chickens to being free range. The one hen was free range before she became my chicken, and doesn't have the best track record with returning to the coop at night. However, she has always stuck right around my house, and roosted in the same tree so was easy to find...
Is this normal? No matter where I put it, in the run, in the coop, on the ground, on a concrete block, the chickens keep pooping in their water dish. Is there anything I can do to keep them from pooping in their water? Right now I am changing their water several times a day because of this issue.
I have a layer pellet for my chickens, and I am wondering how much I should be feeding a day, and how much of their food should come from foraging. Right now 2 chickens they are getting 2 cups a day that I spread around their run to give them some entertainment in finding it.
I found an old tin livestock waterer in the garage, its only about 6 inches tall, and I was thinking that it might be a good bird bath for the wild birds...or chickens. Do chickens like bird bathes?
I put up my fence for my hen today. I made sure that there was lots of layer pellet laying around for her to munch on, and that got her attention for a few minutes, then she saw the fence. Now all she is doing is pacing the fence and panting. I gave her a treat of some granola and as long as...
I currently have a roughly year old hen and I will be bringing my second hen home Monday (hopefully), who is also a rougly year old hen. What is the best way to introduce the two hens? My coop is on the smaller side, 2 foot by 4 foot or so, and a lot of the room is taken up by the nesting boxes...
My cranky chicken must finally be feeling at home because last night when I went to clean out the coop there was an egg in the nest I made for her! I was so excited I called just about everybody that I know. She kept looking at it like she wasn't quite sure what it was or why it was there, poor...
I have been feeding my chicken bread as a treat in an attempt to get her to warm up to me and not run for the back of the coop whenever I stick my head in. However, I have noticed that she hasn't been touching her actual chicken food much recently. Is giving her scraps every day too often?
Can anybody tell me anything about this breed? Friend has one that isn't going to make it as a show chicken and is looking to rehome her. She has been well handled so I thought it may be fun for me, but how is this breed for a total beginner?
First off, this is a rather scary section to read through, I don't like thinking about all the things that can go wrong with my chicken!
My adopted chicken got attacked by the neighbors rooster, pretty brutally too. It almost looks like her back was skinned, all the feathers were removed all...
I would like to get another hen to keep mine company. I would really like a chochin (sp?) but I am only finding chicks available in my area. I don't feel comfortable yet to have a chick (or a rooster). What are some good breeds that are friendly and easy on a beginner?
This is my current chicken set up. Its an old dog house built into the wall of the garage. Its about two foot deep by four foot long. The opening is maybe a foot wide, so I am limited on what I wil be able to manuever in to it. I plan to saw an old apple crate in half to make it shorter (to fit...
Hello everybody! I am totally new to the world of chickens, and am full of questions. One of my neighbor's chickens has been hanging out in my yard for several days now. I finally went over to let them know that their chicken was over in my yard and one thing led to another that resulted in me...
