I've got a small flock of seven 6-week old chicks. The most entertaining and forager supreme is the little Silver Laced Wyandotte. That chick must have come out the egg scratching and pecking. She's like a little bulldozer in my flower beds. I've got a question though that I'm curious about...
Tomorrow is predicted to be our first really hot day of the summer - 102 F. My chicks are 1 week old and brooding outdoors in their coop. I've got a large Coke bottle in the freezer and am planning on putting that in the coop with them tomorrow in case the heat gets too much for them.
$175 for a glass company to replace a window - that's what happens when a 2 x 4 falls into it. Uggh. If anyone asks what it costs to build a chicken coop I'm going to tell them it's not about saving money it's about the eggs and the great chicken pets.
I didn't know exactly where to post this but thought I'd share the website for the Hermitage of the Holy Cross in Wayne, West Virginia.

Holy Cross is an Orthodox mens monastery in the Russian Orthodox Church tradition. They have great photos of their...
I've done it - I just placed my on-line order with Meyers for 9 chicks. The earliest delivery I could get was first week in May. I have spent literally 2 years looking at chicken websites and making lists of breeds, building a coop (not yet finished) and now I just did it. I hit the purchase...
Just wanted to pass along a recommendation for an excellent natural history book called "Feathers: The Evolution of a Natural Miracle" by Thor Hanson. It's an easy read and while it deals with the adaptive use of feathers by all birds, it does have some chicken references (and to the author's...
San Antonio/Bexar County has only been historically on the edge of the range of the Giant Cicada "Chicharra". For the past few years they've been expanding their range into the Hill Country and now this is what you hear outside along with the usual dog day cicada. They are pretty awesome...
Wow, this sure seems to have all the makings of a really nice or really disastrous Opening Ceremony at the London Olympics. Gonna have to make sure I watch this one just to see how they keep the chickens under control. I just picture livestock running amok...
Don't know if this is the right location for this thread but there was a nice front page news article (with backyard chicken photos) this past Friday in the San Antonio paper about the rise in local urban agriculture with some great focus on backyard chickens. I guess chickens are more...
I have done comparisons on the price of 1/2" hardware cloth (24" x 100') at Sears, Tractor Supply, Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon and Wayfair, and so far, Wayfair has had the cheapest price ($61.65 plus free shipping). It was another poster to BYC that steered me to Wayfair cause I'd never heard of...
I have not been able to find any information on BYC about Carter's Legacy Farms in Loxley, Alabama. Has anyone ordered from them before and were you happy with the quality of their chicks?
Thank you.
OK, so this may sound totally crazy, but I can't be the first. Small yard and looking for coop locations. We have a large covered patio (20 x 25), with a very solid tin covered roof, outside our living room. The surface is covered in unstained Saltillo tile, one side is the brick wall to the...
Due to the small size of my yard and the placement of some raised vegetable beds, the best site I can find for my coop will be in a narrow side yard about 7 feet wide. If I use this location I want to use the Garden Ark plans and modify the size to 3' x 8', building 2 coops to house a total of...
I'm Tina from San Antonio, Texas, and have been lurking this site for well over a year and a half. I think I finally have my husband's resistance broken down and will be starting a coop build in a couple of months, probably 2 slightly modified Garden Arks since I have limited yard space (I'd...
