8 week old chicks pecking at 6 week olds

I have 3 8 week old chicks and just picked up 2 6 week olds. I let them run around the yard for a while initially and the most dominant 8 week-old chased and pecked at them a bit. I put them in the coop run to "sort things out" and the older chicks are still pecking at the younger ones and...

    Dead hen this afternoon

This afternoon I heard loud clucking from one of my Silver Laced Wyandottes. I didn't think anything of it as she tends to be the loudest our our 3 hens and does that every once in a while. An hour or so later when I went outside, she was dead in the run - curled up right by the door. She...

wording for free ranging in an ordinance

I have successfully convinced my town to create a permanent ordinance (we first had a one year pilot) and they are willing to allow free ranging. I've been asked to help with the wording of that part of the ordinance. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

My hen just finished her first molt and now she won't come anywhere near me. She used to eat right out of my hand. Is this common?

Hen sleeping (and pooping) in nesting box

Since the temperatures dropped a bit (I'm in NJ) my 2 out of 3 of my hens have stopped laying, which I expected, but the one who is still laying eggs has been sleeping, and therefore pooping in the nesting box. Any tips on how to stop this behavior? Thanks!

    Does the squatting last?

My hens squat now when I get near them (they all recently started laying - they're 22 weeks old). I can then pick them up and put them back in the coop, which makes things so much easier than chasing them around the backyard! Does the squatting behavior continue or once they get more used to...

Is this Silver Laced Wyandotte a hen or a rooster?

This is Zebra, a 21 week old Silver Laced Wynadotte. She/ he is way louder when clucking than my other Silver laced wyandotte who just started laying this week. Also, her comb and wattle are more pronounced. Can anyone tell if this a hen or a rooster? THANKS!

Did my hens eat their egg?

Hi. I have 20 week old Silver Laced Wyandottes, one of whom layed her first egg in the nest box Sunday afternoon. Monday there were no eggs. This morning when I opened up the coop and cleaned out the poop tray. There was slimy yellow (looked like egg) mixed in with the cedar shavings. There...

    when to open nesting box

I am new to chicken raising - have had our girls for almst 2 weeks now - two 11 week old Silver Laced Wyandottes and one 10 week old East Egger. We have closed off the nesting box because they were hanging out in there and pooping. How do I know when to open it back up? Thanks!
