Asides from the obvious Cornish X debate - what breed would be best for me to raise specifically to eat and at what age? We like white meat, so large breasted birds.....GO

Will all fertilized eggs have bloody spot in them?

Up until the past month when my rooster got older and started climbing on the girls, I have not had to deal with fertilized eggs at all. He was an accident :) I was hoping he was a hen.... anyways, I collect the eggs every day so they don't have time to sit and develop. But will all the eggs...

    Polish - hens or roos?

I have no knowledge of Polish chickens but I'm trading a Welsummer for these two cuties! I would guess the right is a hen and the left is a roo, but that's an uneducated guess LOL They are about 3 months old.

Please Respond - Chickens not laying yet

I've posted a couple of times to get advice and I don't get a lot of feedback here. I'm not experienced enough to answer many questions but I read through everything. So not sure if my lack of responses is because people are not familiar with my name or what. But I am desperately seeking...

So deer guts and cat food are good for our hens?

After reading some on Feeding Your Chickens for Cheap and the Old Timers thread am I understanding that getting meat waste from my deer processor friend and/or feeding my chickens cat food is actually better for them than laying pellets? I have 18 hens and 1 rooster. 13 of the hens are 20-25...

Can you not buy turkeys this time of year?

Every website I've visited says Sold Out for 2012. Anyone know where I can buy some this time of year or are they not like chickens and hatch year round? I'd love to have one in time to cook for Christmas but maybe I've waited too long. We are right at 20 weeks til then. Or will I just have to...

Two hens hiding eggs or not laying?

I have one extremely nervous, shy white RIR (Snow) and one Aracauna (Katniss) that is the newest hen that has befriended Snow. My other 5 hens lay about every other day, a few every day, even in this awful Texas heat. But those two hens -Snow hasn't laid an egg in 3 weeks, and Katniss I've had...

Old Timers - Does this sexing tip work for you?

My grandpa has had chickens ever since I can remember. I told him I was going to get some French Black Copper Maran chicks and hoped I got some pullets. He said if you hold them upside down by their toes - roos will hang straight down and not move, but pullets would curl back up and try to...
