Hi! So the fair is next week. I posted pics of the ducks my daughter is taking. We are new to ducks so I need help - male or female? There is no obvious curl yet, hatch end of March. The Pekin is almost 10 lbs. let me know what you think!
Hi!
So here's Violet - my daughters lavender Orpington she's taking to the fair next week. Check out her tail feathers - they look not so soft and fluffy like the rest of her body. Any ideas on how to fix this? Or is it even an issue? We don't have a poultry leader and need advice. Thank you!
So....my daughter wants to try her hand at taking a duck to the fair this year. We have taken chickens and turkeys in the past, but she wants to try something new. She would like to start with a smaller, calmer bird - perhaps a bantam such as a call or a welsh harlequin (open to any other...
Hey everyone,
Always appreciate all the advice I find on this site. I have raised chickens for a few years now, so I feel like I've got a general idea of what I am doing....but maybe I don't :(. I started with a small flock of 5 chickens and everything was great - laying great, healthy...
So, I've got about 20 layers and 1 rooster I put in with them this spring. He just kept growing and growing and got HUGE. Then he was over-mating with the hens to the point of bald heads and backs. Enough I thought, and moved him out of the coop so they could heal.
Well, that is NOT what is...
So this is my first year of raising turkeys. I have 5 palms, hoping to send 2 to freezer camp and keeping 1 tom and 2 hens for eggs next spring. So, soon i will have to decide who stays and who goes. They are about 6 months old.
There are 2 toms, one is definately more in change than the other...
Not having the best of luck with my current batch of freedom rangers. They are 7 weeks and look about 3weeks. On a 21% protein diet and in a chicken tractor that is moved daily. I have lost almost 10 of then, no rhyme or reason. Currently treating for cocci as I have nothing to lose at this...
So my baby chicks are not babies anymore....5 months old. And the rooster has been doing his business with the ladies. I cracked one off the eggs and it had the bulls eye! That means the rooster getting the job done.
But, my question is, being that the eggs are from such young chickens, should...
Hey guys,
This is my first year raising BBW turkeys for the thanksgiving market. Starting small...I started with 30 and am down to 25. I am finding that my feed is lacking in vitamins and minerals, even though the feed guy said they don't live long enough for it to matter...not true! having...
Hi there all,
I have 27 BBW I am raising for the thanksgiving market. This is my first go at it, so bare with me. They are about 8 weeks old. Today I noticed one of the stumbling around, like she was drunk or something. When I investigated further I noticed the top of one of her feet is...
So here is the story.
This is our first year raising thanksgiving turkeys. I have 27 that are 8 weeks old. Our plans were that they would have access to a fenced pasture area. So, I bought all of their grower at the feed mill accordingly, assuming they would be getting a lot of vitamins and...
I have 28 BBWs that are almost 3 weeks old. I am supposed to start restricting feed, like the Cornish X, 12 hours on and 12 hours off? Or can they handle free choice?
So we are pretty new to this turkey thing. We have 30 2 week old bbw poults. I lost one on day 3, otherwise they were all doing well. Last evening, I was doing chores and saw one turkey kind of slow to react and wings down. I picked her up and flipped her over and her butt was super swollen and...
So my australorp, known as Truck ( yes a girl who was named by my son :)) is missing feathers on both wings. It started in early spring and has gotten progressively worse. She is also missing a few on her chest area.
I got close enough today to see that it looked like they are getting pecked...
So today was interesting.
I have 30 freedom ranger in a brooder...3 weeks old. I know, that totally need to be outside. They are moving out there this weekend. Anyways, when I go to feed them, they get all flighty. I have a metal fence like grate on top of the brooder to keep them in. One...
So this is my first run at Cornish Cross. They are 5 weeks old and about 2.5 pounds average. I have 22 of them. We are feeding them fermented feed at 21% protein. They are also outside in a chicken tractor but don't have a ton of interest in eating the grass.
According to what I have read...
I have been told to add some extra calcium to my Cornish x diet to avoid leg problems. So the question is how much per bird? What source is best...lime, oyster shell, milk replacer? I have 22 birds that are about 10 days old and I am fermenting their feed for the most part. Can I put the calcium...
So this is our first go round with turkeys, and I currently have 5 royal palms that are about 4 weeks old. In my master plan, i'd like to keep a pair for breeding and butcher the rest. At what age do you choose who that pair is, and how do you feed them differently?
So I thought I knew what I was doing...
So this is my first spring incubating eggs. I read up on it. I got a farm innovations still air cheapy incubator on sale. I ordered some runner ducks eggs on ebay. I got 7 out of 14 eggs to hatch. Not bad! Needless to say I was addicted!!
There are...
On day 3 of first run Cornish x....
I noticed this morning this 1 chick was a little smaller and slower than the rest. I put him by the water and dunked his head and hoped for the best. By this afternoon he was getting trampled on.
I just brought him inside and gave him some water with a...
