Who composts chicken bedding?
I have a compost tumbler and have been added all their bedding straight into the tumbler, added some water as it dried out, and also thrown in some cut grass for some green material.
In your opinion, will the compost be ready for use in my garden by the spring? I...
I need help, I'm not sure what's going on but my hens have stopped going in the coop at night.
At 1st I wondered if maybe our top hen was keeping them out. But today her and 2 others were still out.
We have an Omelet automatic door and currently have it set to close about 45 minutes after...
We've had plenty of small eggs from the ladies when they first started laying, but this mini egg we got yesterday takes the cake for smallness. Its about half the size of the medium blue egg and almost completely round.
Used plastic sheeting with straw packed behind to insulate the coop framing today. Then, I caulked the seams and cracks between wall boards.
Then, I laid deep bedding on the floor of the coop.
I feel great about how it turned out. Upstate NY winters can be brutal...
Our Easter egger started laying today! We are in love with the blue egg!!
We also have an Australorp who started laying first, the light brown eggs are hers.
However, we expected darker brown eggs from our Marans hens.
Do you think the egg colors will get darker at all?
Do egg colors change...
Is it common for birds to not lay in the nesting box? Ours just started laying, but plops them right on the floor of the coop. And 2 of 4 have been trampled/smashed by the other birds.
I use pine bedding currently. Is my bedding too rough/uncomfortable for them?
Just got our 1st egg from our Australorp below. Still waiting on the dark chocolate eggs from our 3 Black Copper Marans and green/blue (or brown) eggs from the Easter Egger.
We love our hens and their different colors and personalities.
Our Australorp has started squawking like crazy on days...
I was told both white birds were Lavender Orpingtons. Looking at other pics of adult birds, it seems that is not correct. Alot of Brown on the rooster, tons of grey and gold on the hen.
Could they be another type of Orpington? What do you think?
We have 5 chickens, straight run. 3 Black Australorps and 2 Lavender Orpingtons. 2 of my Australorps will not go in the coop each night.
They are all new to the coop, with a step "ladder" to get to the door, which is an Omlet automatic Chicken door, set to close at the same time each night...
Hey! I want solar power for my coop. The coop's not close enough to the house and I don't want power cords running all through my back yard.
Biggest need for power to coop is for heated water and maybe a light. Winters in upstate NY are long and hard.
I DO NOT want to knock out frozen blocks...
