Just lost my first chicken - help me figure out what got it? (warning: picture)

Facts: - I live in the pacific northwest; rural suburbia bordering forest. - Animals that have been seen in my neighborhood: bear, cougar, bobcat, coyote, raccoon, possum, weasel, rat, snake, owl - Opened the coop up earlier than usual this morning 6am and left at 6:30 on a foraging trip to...

Impacted crop treatment - when to start back on solid food?

I started treating one of my hens yesterday for impacted crop - (massage the mass, olive oil/molasses/cooked oatmeal/meal worms/acidopholus capsules and access to water with ACV (they always get that anyway). Her crop wasn't completely empty this morning, but much better. I have her isolated...

    crop issue or no?

26 week old speckled sussex with enlarged crop. She is acting fine and when I massage the mass, it isn't hard. I know I need to check her tomorrow and see if her crop is empty - and if it is not, isolate her and take her off solid food and try olive oil and/or molasses - but is there anything I...

consolidating chickens: no trouble on first introduction - all will be good?

Hi there, I'm attempting to consolidate a flock of 3 18 week old hens (speckled sussex, gold-laced wyndotte, cuckoo maran) and 2 9 week old buckeye chicks. I had the chicks in a wire dog crate during the day next to the hen's run/paddock for a couple weeks, and then moved them into a plastic...

    buckeye cockerel?

I have 2 seven week old buckeye chicks, and due to differences in the combs, I suspect one is male and one is female. Suspected pullet: Suspected cockerel: thoughts?

nice, then mean, then nice, then mean

I am a first time chicken owner and have five 11 week old birds that I have raised since they were 2 day old chicks. When they were still inside in the dog crate, I could get them to perch on my arm, and one even liked to sit on my shoulder. Then I moved them outside, and they wouldn't even...

Add a couple; remove a couple - at the same time?

Hi there, I have four 11 week old pullets (2 wyndottes, 1 cuckoo maran, 1 speckled sussex) and an 11 week old cockerel + two 2 week old buckeye chicks. At some point I plan on culling the rooster and the meanest wyndotte from the flock and integrating the buckeyes. I am thinking it might be...

Does fish meal in the feed make the meat taste funny?

I am raising dual purpose birds on a corn-free, soy-free diet primarily for eggs, but I've got a cockerel and a mean pullet that will get butchered. The feed I use (Scratch and Peck Naturally Free Grower) includes fish meal and someone mentioned to me that that too much will make meat taste...

Cockerel? (5 week old speckled sussex)

I have 2 speckled sussex, 5 weeks old, and one has a more developed, pinker comb + more white on the breast. I don't see much difference in the tails or legs. Anybody have thoughts on sexes? Picture 1: suspected pullet on the left; suspected cockerel on the right? Pictures 2 and 3: suspected...

butcher recommendation in greater seattle area?

Hi there, I purchased 5 dual purpose chicks for egg production, and have discovered one is most likely male. I'd like to be able to process him myself, but self-awareness is telling me that's not so likely. I have the name of one person I can hire to butcher, but she's over an hour a way...

Confirm I've got a roo? (3 week old golden laced wyndotte)

My chicks (speckled sussex, cuckoo maran, and gold laced wyndotte breeds) are about 3 weeks old. One (of the golden laced wyndottes) has a noticeably different comb (paler, wider, flatter) and the tail looks a little more curved. Sorry about the picture quality (they refuse to stop moving!)...
