    Coop sand in winter

So this year I switched from straw to sand in the coop. It's fantastic. But now it's winter and you know how ducks are... wet mess everywhere even without water in the coop. That sand has turned to a frozen brick. The coop is insulated underneath but I'm concerned that it's too cold for them...

Feeding the ducks by hand - silly video

Okay, so the camera work here is really bad. Apologies in advance. I was trying to keep the camera far enough back to get them in the shot while feeding them at the same time. This is exactly why the ducks, which were terrified of us, now follow us around the yard...

Ducks in the pool - short video

Here are our campbells taking a dip in their temporary pool. It seemed so big when I got it. I cut it short to keep it PG since the boy didn't waste any time in trying to make ducklings.

Anyone ever had a gender-confused duck?

So one of my ducks is experimenting with drake behavior. I've never had one like this before. She is okay being apart from the other two. She has also been biting the neck of the other female and even tried to mount her (I think.) They're all about four months old, so just coming into maturity...

    Duck with 3-D printed foot

Had to post this here since I knew this group would appreciate it: A duck born with a bad foot had one 3-D printed for it and now it can walk. Sadly the drake still has to endure the name "Buttercup". Story here...

Easy One? What gender are these two?

So I'm trying to learn how to tell chicken gender. I'm going to post pics of our two chicks, followed by what I think they are and why. Tell me how far off I am :) These are both around 8 weeks and were sold to me as pullets... First one, much whiter than the other: Here's a head-shot...

    Freaking bears!

So the cops came today to chase a bear out of my backyard while I was at work. In suburbia. Bears aren't that uncommon here but I have never had one bother my flock. Well it got one of my chickens this time. Most of them were locked up in their run, but two got out to range this morning. Didn't...

    Need waterer ideas

The waterer I'm using right now is maybe a gallon and my 3 ducks (and 2 chickens) go through that in about 30 minutes. It's unreal! It's one of those buckets with a tray at the bottom. I need a system that has water deep enough for them to dip their heads in but is more like 5 gallons. Any ideas?

    Snow Ducks!

I felt bad keeping the quackers cooped up all day yesterday because of the snow. So I let them out for a bit. Within 30 minutes I had duck tracks all over my backyard. They love the white stuff! The chickens? Not so much.

    Chicken/Duck coop build (pic heavy)

So I got my new ducklings and chicks in mid-march, thinking I'd have lots of nice weather to build a coop. The goal was to have it ready within four weeks because at that point they're too big (and smelly) to be in the house anymore. Well... the weather hasn't really cooperated so I've been...

Sand in an elevated duck house?

I've read through several ducks and sand bedding threads. I didn't see anyone who used sand inside the coop if it has a wooden floor. Mine is covered with linoleum and I'm wondering if sand would make sense in this situation. It can't drain to the ground so do you think it would be too wet?

    Advice on unwanted roosters

So I was under the mistaken assumption that I was getting pullets for laying - it appears that I may have ended up with a pair of roos. I can't keep them within the city here and I'm not equipped to process them. Not to sound callous but I'm paying to feed them right now and they're not going...

Colorful little birds - what gender?

Here are my two little chirpers. The one on the right is quite a bit darker in color and larger, too. Given what little I've read about sexing chicks I'm guessing he's a rooster. Any thoughts? Thanks!

New addition - couple of questions

I just adopted a pair of chickens - it's my first time with them, though I've raised ducks in the past. Any idea how old this little one is? Any insight you can share into the breeds' characteristics? Thanks!

Need some help with quacker coop design

I've got three ducklings coming in a couple of weeks and I'd like to get started on their coop and run. This time around I'll be adding a single chicken to the mix. The idea is to keep them all together, though we'll see how that works out with the mallard once he gets older... I've been...
