Woke up this morning to find my healthiest, friendliest buff orp lying on the floor of the run. Her head is all floppy, she can barely raise it. Her body is floppy too. Her feet are curled in. She coos when I pick her up very quietly.
I isolated her, gave her some water with apple cider...
Just picked up a light brahma about 1 week old, a black astralorp about 2 days old and a BEAUTIFUL blue orp about 8 weeks old. I was only supposed to get two..but man, they are so cute. The blue orp is SO ladylike. I just hope my existing girls are nice to her. I kept her in the dog crate inside...
Anytme i try and pet any chick other than her, she comes up and either pecks the hen i am holding or pecks me! She is only content when I put the other girl down and pick her up.
Ideas? Can this behavior be stopped?
Okay, we got two straight run Brown Leghorn chicks about 9 weeks ago (at least that's what we think they are, breedwise) and we're trying to decide if both are roos, or just one, or neither. No crowing as of yet.
Here is the one with a smaller waddle: (pic#1)
Here is the one with the bigger...
We want to add two chicks to our group. We are looking for friendly, pretty birds. Local breeder is taking orders for the following chicks. What would you recommend? I definitely am leaning towards a Mille d'uclle or two.
Here is what they are offering: silver laced Wyandotti, Columbian Chohin...
We are building a combo coop/run. We are enclosing the sides and bottom with hardware cloth, but for the roof, my husband thought that the plastic sheeting would be sufficient. I somehow think a raccoon would be able to chew through that, and after investing all the time nad money in the...
One of our 11 chicks, a white plymouth is being pecked, or is pecking herself. I have put triple antibiotic and iodine (couldnt get any blukote today so that was the alternative) and it is less gross and bloody today. I have also isolated her. She tried pecking herself but stopped, so I guess...
We live in Florida and are in the midst of building our coop and run. The end of the run happens to be closer to the house, and I was wondering if one could build nest boxes on the side of the run, as opposed to the coop. It's warm pretty much year round here, so that isn't an issue. The coop...
The first
The first two photos are of one chick, with less black on her legs. The third photo is a BR with MORE striping on her legs.
I have been reading about how the stripes on their legs can indicate whether the BRs are boys or girls. Can anyone help?
We have two barred rocks, probably about 10 days old. they seem healthy, running around, eating. But they look kinda....drab compared to our other chicks. they aren't glossy or fluffy. they are getting in their wing feathers fine, so i am not too worried. Do barred rocks tend to look a little...
We live in Florida near West Palm Beach. Summers get hot, and the coldest it has been in winter over the last few years is around 50 or so at night during a cold snap.
We have 11 chicks, and i am trying to design a coop and run that will accomodate them. During a short cold snap, they can...
Got our new chicks today, first time owners here! One was not identified by the feed store, perhaps you can help?

Compared to the other chicks we got, these guys are quite small.
Hi! I live in Florida with my two young boys and husband, and we plan on getting a few chicks in the next month. Our local feed store has a few, as well as a "resident expert", so we will rely a lot on them at first. We want good layers, friendly with kids, and chickens that are good in hot...
