how many birds in our coop?

I know it's a difficult question but bear with me. We live on the gulf coast of texas so our weather is relatively mild with very few truly cold or freezing days. Most of our winter is around 50*. It's the heat that's the worst with a couple months in the summer usually upper 90s or over 100. So...

roo taking up residence in other coop?

We have 2 set ups. 7 birds in our permanent coop. 3 youngers in a newly built chicken tractor. Last night one of the bigger birds was missing, and was found in the tractor on a roost (the 3 youngers were cowering on the other roost). We took him back to the big bird home. Someone didnt close the...

    butchering roosters

We have never done this but recently found out that out of the 10 birds we have 7 are roos. Yay. Ive watched youtube videos on the butcher technique. Now, how many can realistically be killed in one day? Ive heard they need to be refrigerated for a few days before cooking or preparing for...

hens acting like roosters? (molesting other hens?)

We have 7 birds. 2 americaunas which are molested often as well as bullied, 3 rir, 2 deleware. 1 del and 1 rir are roos. Obvious by their struts, combs, feathering, and of course crowing. My family thinks the other 2 rir are roos but they have smaller combs, less flamboyant feathering, and dont...

    mating/behavior/pecking order question

7 birds, 2 are roos, 5 arent. (Obviously lol) 1 rir and 1 deleware roo. 2 americaunas (bottom of the pecking order), 2 rir and 1 deleware pullets. In the pen tonight the deleware roo (col sanders) kind of came at one of the americaunas, but then the rir roo (big red) and then mated with her...

    a funny from tonight

My 13 yo daughter said "ew!" And we asked what was up. She said 2 chickens were mating. I went to look and they were all lined up on the back step railing where they have decided to take up roosting. (2nd night ina row we have to to carry them to the coop) She said the roo was on top of one of...

    chickens not returning at night?

So, this week we stopped letting our chickens out of the run first thing to free range. And I keep them there til about 3, bc they are getting close to laying. And I want them laying in the coop, not the brush! Lol! So, they seem to spend all their free range time on or by the back porch...

    sexing my EEs?

This is one of my americaunas - about 17 weeks. I have 2 that looks similar, tho the other is darker. Same size, same comb, etc. I'm thinking pullets? I have 3 smaller chicks too, 1 americauna, 2 RIRs. I'm thinking 1 rir is a roo bc its bigger but not sure. They about 8 weeks. The americauna...

    getting them ready to lay?

Our hens are about 17 weeks (2 RIR, 2 americauna, 1 deleware). We tore out the old nesting boxes a few weeks back and are replacing them this weekend and giving better roosting boards. They free range all day but I read to keep them in their run til late afternoon and only let out a few hours so...

    laying question

If the chickens free range, once they start laying, will they lay in the henhouse or will I have to do an egg hunt thru the property and brush?

    pool water and chickens?

Our chickens free range. They usually hang around the house including the pool area and eat bugs and weeds (and I think frogs bc we have found a couple frog carcasses *gag*). Today we came home and they were in the pool area (its a wood fence and they either go thru the femce slats or over the...
