Have I opened a can of worms? :P
What's your favorite chicken breed as far as the roos go? Some are downright gorgeous, but I can never remember what breeds they are.
(I wasn't sure where to put this thread--sorry if I'm in the wrong place.)
When a chicken molts, will the new feathers grow in with the exact same patterns as the old? One of my hens has one little half-black feather on her shoulder and it's the only way I can tell her apart. :P You think it'll still be there after she molts?
Ethel's gone. -sigh- We found her all cold and crumpled underneath the nest boxes. She wasn't sick or... y'know, eaten... so it must have been a scorpion--which is still kind of surprising considering I've been stung by three to no ill effect, but a little chicken body must be too small to...
My flock is pretty friendly. They'll all hop up onto my lap (or shoulder, or head... ouch) and let me pat them, but heaven forbid I try to pick one up. Some are better than others, but the most I can really do is scoop one up and very quickly deposit it elsewhere. No cuddling or chance to...
Go crazy!
My dream flock would probably be...
5 Rhodies
5 Buff Orpies
5 Easter Eggers
5 Wyandottes
And a few Sebrights just because they're SO pretty. <3
And then maybe a few breeding groups so I could sell chicks--probably Rhodies and Orpies, but going a little mad scientist with different...
Admittedly, this is an extremely silly and total newbie question, but I'm honestly curious. I'd never really been around chickens before I got mine, so I was little surprised that instead of the "bawk bawk bawk" I was expecting, I got squeals and squeaks and pigeon coos and belligerent yelling...
Hi. :) I live in the desert and it can get up to the high 90s with (unfairly) high humidity. It's not that bad yet, but my chickens are already panting through the afternoon. They have plenty of shade and two full waterers, but I can't help but feel a little bad for them out there in the heat...
Here are my seven lovely girls. <3 They're about five and a half months old, and I raised them from day-old chicks.
This is Barley. She was the first to start laying and she's the most amenable to being picked up, but she picks on Peaches and Five like there's no tomorrow.
This is...
Hey, all! :)
About five months ago I got my first flock of seven Rhodie hens, and discovered the BYC forums soon after (mostly by Googling "can chickens eat X"!). I've been lurking around ever since, but I finally decided to join the party. I look forward to getting to know you guys! :)
