Two Australorps, both 15 weeks, looking quite different. Chicken 1 is smaller built with very long tail feathers. Chicken 2 is more robust, with a shorter tail. Which is hen, which is a roo? Or are they both hens as my husband insists?
Does the "deep litter method" only work for indoors? I don't want to use sand in my run. It will be a small run for 5 chickens, because they will be able to "free range" in my fenced back yard during the day. I just really, really, don't want to clean it often. And sand sounds way too much like...
Hi, I've been lurking here for 2 years! My husband told me about his fun having chickens in his suburban home as a kid. We decided when we moved (last October), we'd pick a place we were allowed to have chickens. We can only technically have 5, and no roosters.
Soooo....fast forward to spring...
This is the feeder I'm using for three 12 week old chickens, hanging at their chest height, with crumble:
And dang if they don't knock it around, send it swinging, eat like animals (oh, wait...) and knock at least a third if not more of the feed all over the bottom of the coop.
I tried...
I posted the 10 week growth of my buff orpington and white plymouth rock pullets/hens, so here is ... what should have been my Rhode Island Red pullet, too, but you know how these things happen. Thank heavens we named her Gingy, which worked equally well for a boy (Gingy of Shrek fame was a boy...

Let me introduce you to Pickles, my White Plymouth Rock. I've been documenting her growth and this is what we have so far! Unlike yesterday's post, with my sweet Buff Orpington, Pickles is more skittish and let me tell you it took a LOT of work to get these pics!

Because this was always fascinating to me, I've been documenting my chicks growth week by week. They are 12 weeks now, but I'm getting the different breeds collages together. First up, Buffy the Buff Orpington! Yeah, I know, we were real creative on her name.

We live in suburbia, and have a very slim margin of error for our tiny flock. Local ordinance only allows 4 hens, and no roosters. While we could probably get away with 5-6 hens as long as no complaints are registered by the neighbors, we simply cannot have a rooster. This is a pet/eggs for fun...
