Help! araucana volneteering to be dog food!

My wife's favorite chicken has decided it likes to perch on our neighbor's 5 foot high chain link fence. Yesterday I walked out back and the araucana was on the other side of the fence looking for a way back into our yard. This normally wouldn't be a crisis except our neighbor has 5+ Great...

Are there breeds of chickens that crow less or not at all?

I'm going to assume the answer is no, but I thought I would ask. My wife has a no-rooster rule (she doesn't want to tick off the neighbors), and I tend to agree. I thought perhaps there might be a breed that doesn't crow? thanks.

how to train the chicks to move up into the roost at night?

My chicks were born 2/27 so they are about 6 weeks old now. We are trying to get them out in the coop at night permanently. We have had a few false starts because its been too cold, but this week's forecast looks fine. I put the heat lamp in the upstairs of the roost and some of the...

Highs 60 Lows 45, When to move 5 week old chicks outside to the coop?

~~We have 6 chicks born 2/27. They are in the same big tub inside we had them in since they were 3 days old. Now they really big, have feathers, and outgrowing the tub. We have been putting them in the coop during the day on warm days here in southern Illinois, but have not left them outside in...

Which bag of feed to buy for growing chicks?

We got six baby chicks about a month ago. We have been feeding them medicated chick feed from the Farm Supply store. The 50lb bag is about 1/3 gone already. I was looking this weekend at what comes next but the store had about 6 different types/brands of feed. Some called Chicken Scratch...

When do chicks stop chirping and start clucking?

Ours are 3 weeks old now, and they look much difference than they did when we got them. Growing fast.. Behavior is changing too. I was thinking last night when do they stop chirping/cheeping and start clucking like a hen? (or hopefully not crowing...) thanks.

how long/old before the chicks can go outside this spring (In Illinois)

We have had lousy winter. The forecast for the next 10 days is basically at or near freezing at night. The chicks are 2 weeks old, and I assume I should not put them outside in the coop until they have all their feathers, and even then with a heat light or two (in case one burns out)? Any...

    Wire for the coop?

Tell me if this is correct. Chicken wire keeps chickens in but it does nothing to protect against racoons, coyotes, etc. The welds in welded wire can be broken by large Racoons. Galvanized hardware cloth would be the best bet. thanks.

New member from St. Louis Mo area (Illinois side of the river) with a new Avatar

Hi, I'm interested in having some backyard chickens. my lot is about 2/3 of one acre, and the back 2/3s are fenced. So shouldn't be a problem. We live outside the city limits, but probably still don't want to tick off the neighbors with a rooster. I was thinking what would work for an...

Auto doors, chicken curfews and vacations

Hi, I'm looking into getting some backyard chickens. I have a few questions I'm not sure about. I've seen some automatic doors for coops and I'm not really sure if they work as advertised. All the videos online show the door opening, and the chickens heading out the door. I don't see...
