    Chicken Math

I haven't seen any active 'chicken math' threads on BYC lately, and I love reading these kinds of stories. So I decided to make a thread myself. My chicken journey has been a long one. Ever since 2009 (and the original plan of a couple of egg layers) I have expanded my flock to include several...

    Anyone else watching Wimbledon?

I love watching Wimbledon each year, and I was just wondering if any fellow BYCers are watching it too at the moment? :)

The Cluckative Flock - a neverending story

On a farm on top of a hill, between the valleys of the beautiful Natal Midlands, there lives a very 'cluckative' Pekin Bantam rooster named Rudy. He lives together with his happy hens on his own piece of territory. Even though he has only been the proud head of this settlement for a short...

    Broody-Hatch-a-Long ~ July

One of my cochin bantam hens recently went broody, so I gave her 6 eggs to sit on. She's due in about 2 weeks, and I'm super excited! I will post pictures asap. If you have a broody who is sitting and whose eggs are due to hatch this month, feel free to post here. I've seen hatch-a-longs for...

    Chocolate and Black orpingtons?

Would it be possible for me to keep a black Orpington rooster with chocolate hens? Would the chicks come out as pure chocolate and pure black? Many thanks Hannah

    October 2015 Hatch-a-Long

This is a thread for anyone who is hatching chicks in October. I'm planning to set Buff and Splash Orpington eggs in a few days. Remember to post photos of your adorable babies when they hatch! I'd love to know what you keep your humidity and temp at when you incubate as well. Happy...

    6 Week Old Buff Orpingtons

I have 5, 6 week old buff orpingtons. They are from pure bred parents, and the parents have white/pink legs. One of these youngsters has the right colored legs, but the others have light yellow legs. Do the legs sometimes lighten as they get older? Or do I have cross breed Orpingtons on my...

    Broody Hen Problem

So I went out to the coop last week to check for eggs, and I had a broody buff orpington hen! For definite. She would puff up her feathers whenever I came near, growling and pecking when I tried to take the eggs out from under her. There were feathers in the nest and she had bare batches on her...

How to look after a broody hen?

So yesterday my buff orpington hen went broody in a coop nest box. That's fine, I've always wanted to hatch my own chicks, and I have a rooster. As this is my first time, I want to do everything right. I moved her into the broody area, and she started sitting on 10 eggs. I have some food and...

What size makes a nice flock ?

What size makes a nice flock? I have 12 hens and a rooster, but thinking of adding more. I have Amber Links so they don't get broody, so would be nice to have a few hens who can hatch chicks. Such a lovely experience to hatch and raise them I've heard. What size flock would you recommend?

    Adding To My Flock

I'd like to add 4 Zulu Hens to my flock of 11 Amber Links. Will they fight? Are Zulu Hens friendly, and are they good layers? Thanks in advance

    Bare patches....caused by pecking??

Most of my hens have bare patches on their back, neck, bottom and under their bellies. One hen is especially bad. She has two bare patches on her back, as pink as a strawberry. Need help, poor hen is looking worse every day...could it be that they are pecking eachother? Much appreciated, ~...

    Not Broody??

I would love my Amber Links hens to sit on their eggs to hatch baby chicks, but so far none of them are broody. I have a rooster, but I'm just curious to know when my hens will start to sit. Anyone know?? Thanx

    Bantam babies coming soon!!

I am currently watching two little pekin bantam eggs laid by my sister's hen, Ruby. It's day 9, and Ruby is starting to look like a good mother, apart from eating her other 7 eggs... We were feeding them all a mixed grain, and by changing to layer pellets, adding more hay to the boxes, and...

    Introducing my Flock

Hi, I'm new to BYC, and have 12 darling Amber Links Hens and a gentle rooster named Charles. I also help my sister sometimes with her 6 pekin batams, and so I like to consider them as part of my flock too. I'm looking forward to posting my experiances, and questions right here in the midst of...
