I let my girls out for some sun and to stretch their legs this afternoon. I looked out the window and was horrified to see a hawk on one of my hens. I opened the door and yelled (get em) to my dog. She bolted acroos the yard and chased the hawk off the hen. The poor hen was bleeding profusely...
My Jack Russell has followed my hen and her new chicks around the yard for two days now. She has always been great with my chickens strangely. She chases and kills everything else.
I let her call all the shots from sitting on her eggs in the main coop to hatching her chick's with all the other hens and rooster with her. Everyone is getting along great and after only three days they are all cruising around the yard behind mom with my chick loving Jack Russell in tow.
About half my chicks have hatched in the coop yesterday. They are under mom in a nesting box on the floor. My other hens and rooster seem to be going about business as usual and not even phased by the new arrivals. I have been closely watching everyone for bad behavior and been prepared to...
I'm so proud of my hen she has been sitting for three weeks and today we have had at least four chicks hatch. Tomorrow should be fun with 9 eggs still under her.[/IMG][/IMG]
Well it seemed like forever but my wife just called me. She hears peeping coming from under our Rhode Island Red hen. I can't wait to get home from work. The timing is great, I have the next three days off to enjoy this. She is on 13 eggs and all looked good last week with the exception of one...
Every morning I throw some treats on the ground for my chickens. I usually walk to a stream on my property so they can wash down what I give them. Anyway as they follow me my rooster has started to run up behind me and hit the back of my legs! He left a mark the other day. He has always been...
Well I just candles 18 eggs and 16 were alive and kicking! I'm in over my head. They are in a nesting box in the coop. I'm pretty sure they are 14 days along. That was another big mistake, not being sure of the date she began to sit on them. I guess I'll have to just keep checking on them...
My Jack Russell has been inseparable from my two Bantams. She watches over them constantly and is always within a few feet of them. I even found her in the coop. Can't believe she fit in their tiny door.[/IMG][/IMG]
I like where I have my coop for my two new Bantams but building a run is going to be a challenge because of the sloped terrain. Any tips on how to deal with this would be appreciated.
This would be just for my Bantam hens. They are tiny and I just figured it looked like an okay opening after I built it. Just looking at it now and it does look small. The 6" is the width and the 10" is the height .
