Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with my 3-year old silkie hen? About a week ago, I noticed her acting strange and discovered she was limping. I've checked all over her feet and legs and can't find any kind of cut or bumble foot. She can kick both legs and move feet-so not broke. She's...
I live in the city, and have a fenced in backyard. I've never had predator trouble, except a hawk in day time. I have a secure coop, but sometimes I don't close the back chicken door until later at night (lesson learned)! Last night, I heard a terrible squawking. Took my dog with me as I ran to...
The last few days a swarm of bee like insects have been hovering around the coop. It is black and yellow, less than an inch long, and very thin, unlike a bee. They have not tried to sting me. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks!
I have an almost 6 month year old rooster (coop has hens 6 months-over a year old). He keeps sleeping on the floor, under the hens. There is plenty of room for him on the 2*4 roosting bar. I tried to gently place him on the bar-that was a mistake. Do roosters like to sleep below the hens?
I had 7 eggs under two broody hens in the coop. Yesterday, two chicks hatched and look to be fine. The hens are still sitting on the other eggs. I haven't seen any piping or cracking, but it's also hard for me to get a good look. Should I and/or when should I remove the other eggs? Is there...
My Silkie just started laying this week (yea!) My other three chickens have not yet started laying. They are all 7 months old or older. Is it safe to switch them from the grower feed to layer? I'm also offering crushed egg shells. I still have some grower left, so I was thinking I would just mix...
I used a 10 gallon bucket and installed horizontal nipples for my flock of four chickens. It's worked perfectly, but this morning, the top of the water and nipples were frozen. I knew this would happen but I didn't think this fast! I've seen several suggestions, including bird bath heater or...
I posted about my EE a few weeks ago. The hatchery assured me it was highly unlikely I received a rooster, but it sure looks like a roo to me. What do y'all think? Thanks! Pics were today, it's 12 weeks old.
I have some bare spots in my back yard that are causing me some mud/erosion issues. I was planning on using some kind of grass seed and fertilizer mix. My chickens free range atleast a few hours a day, so I wanted to make sure there isn't anything I shouldn't use. Thanks!
Jolene was sexed as female (9 weeks old), but I'm worried it may be a rooster. It is bigger than my other EE, the feet and legs are bigger, and it's braver than my other two. Thanks for your help
