Ventilation and what locks for the doors

I just got this coop off Facebook market place (not easy to move). Today I’m wrapping it in hardware cloth and hope to have the girls in it tomorrow. There is only the 1 window in front. Where do I add more ventilation? Also what locks should I use for the doors? They aren’t flush and I feel...

    using broodie to raise chicks

I have a sizzle that has been broody for almost 3 weeks. Tomorrow morning I am getting two 4 day old chicks. I plan to use my sizzle to raise them. I am also set up to raise them if I have to. Question is that tomorrow night we have a freeze warning and it will also be in the 20s Sunday night...

    what is this?

I noticed that my 6 month old silkie had a scab on her left shoulder a few days ago. I thought it was from establishing pecking order (new chicken owner) the next day I noticed she was missing feathers and had scabs under her right wing. At the same time I noticed that she was limping (no...

gray silkie rooster in west haven ct

16 week gray silkie rooster needs a new home. Got from breeder in Long Island at NE Poultry Congress. He's not allowed where I live and I don't want to upset the neighbors. He just started crowing. Very sweet and loves to be held. Rehoming fee $40 to ensure he goes to a good home

    what would you do?

I live in west haven ct and I cant find anything online saying roosters aren't allowed. All I saw was that I'm allowed to have 20 chickens. I currently have 2 silkies and one is a rooster that I found out yesterday when he started crowing. What would you do? Would you just assume he is allowed...

    is it a rooster

This morning I went to carry my 2 silkies to their outdoor run (they are currently on my 3 season porch) and one of them started making a loud calling noise. It didn't sound like a rooster crowing but they are 15 weeks old. Is it possible for hens to make a loud noise when approached?

do your chickens leave the yard?

I don't have my chickens yet but my yard is fenced in. My chickens won't be able to free roam all the time only when I'm in the yard with them. I'm worried they will leave the yard. Would they? I'm only friendly with my neighbors on both sides of my house. Not the back 2 neighbors (where the...

    silkie bantam question

I have the opportunity to get a few silkie bantams this week. I live in the northeast and they are a few weeks old. I wasn't planning chickens until the spring so I don't have a coop yet. Obviously they cant go outside yet because they are only a few weeks old. Do you think I can keep them...

    coop size

Im confused with the square footage for the chickens. I am getting 6 chicks in April and might get a few more than that. I think I would max out at 12-15 chickens but I'm allowed up to 20. Do in make my coop for 20 chickens? Would it be too big for only 6 chickens to start? How big should I make...

how common is it for chicks die when shipped?

I ordered 6 chicks and just wondering if I should count on them all living or if I should get more? They will be my first chickens that I have owned. I'm allowed to have 20 chickens where I live. Everything I've read doesn't say anything about no roosters so I assume they are ok?

    newbie with a question

I don't even own chickens yet. I pre ordered them and they are supposed to ship the week of April 6th! I just found out Agway has chick day in mid-March. Do you have choice of female or are they mixed? Would it be ok to 2 get chicks from them and then add my 6 about 2 weeks later? Chicken math...

    wooden pallets

I see that a few people use them but I have a few questions. I'm planning on getting my first chickens this spring. Where I work medical supplies are delivered on the wooden pallets. Think these are ok? I read that wooden pallets can be bad for the chickens. How do they hold up to northeast winters?
