We had a fun story in the newspapers last year, of someone who buy ordinary eggs in the store and successfully hatching a couple of chicks. Since them, more people have tried, and there are several stories of successful hatches.
Is this common in the US? I live in Norway where eggs are farmed...
I feel like I am jinxed... last time the power went out, this time I wake up and find that the humidity pump has gone dry. Stupid mistake not to check that the container had enough water, I don't know how I missed that.
Anyways - I got humidity back up after some home-made engineering with the...
Iiiik! My hatching projects seem to be jinxed!
Finally a successful batch of eggs - I candled them all yesterday evening, and 22 out of 24 were nicely developed. Then I had a new freezer delivered this evening, and the delivery guyd (or useless husband) pulled out the plug. I discovered it...
Hi,
Fed up with my 9-5 job, and looking for supersmart ways of financing a lazy lifestyle at home :)
So - I sell some chickens, and consider expanding into mealworm production, kalp production etc. Now I have this chicken plucker idea, since I have some roosters that need to go, and I also...
Ok, so I got a bit carried away now that my new coop is finished and looking smashing.
I was planning to buy a big plastic box with a lid for nesting box. But when I got to the store, the plastic box was big, ugly, smelled of plastic chemicals and just put me off. Right next to the ugly box...
Hi,
I just finished my new coop. My husband kind of took over, and the end result is a bit smaller than I wanted - a bit over 3 square meters (32,5 square feet). According to the formula I should have 9 chickens in there (3 per square meter), but ideally I would like to hav 10-15 chicks...
I made to stupid mistakes this lockdown:
1) I forgot to turn off the cooling
2) the incubator is also quite full - there is hardly any space between the eggs.
The hatching is due in 24 hours. I have turned off cooling, but I don't know if I should move some of the eggs to another incubator...
This humidity thing is a mystery to me. I know all about the correct humidity settings for incubators, but how does this translate to the real world? Does the broody hen somehow change her humidity levels at day 18? Does it increase because she never leaves the nest, or what happens?
Just curious
Help!
I set my two incubators on late evening Monday 8th of June. Little did I know that I would be travelling from June 19 to June 26. This means that I need to leave the lockdown procedure to my anti-chicken husband. Luckily he loves his wife, and might make an effort to follow my...
Hi,
I have a Brinsea 7 egg incubator. It is fully automatic, and I have had two successful hatches, but now I have had two that failed miserably. All eggs developed perfectly, but at hatching day, only one managed to get out of the egg. Two others pipped, but failed to zip properly. I tried...
I am feeling a bit down now, as I have lost 3 young chicks (6 weeks) over the last 10 days. Snatched in the middle of the day while people and dogs were in and out of the garden. They were alone 5-10 minutes max when it happened, the last time max 2 minutes. I found some feathers for the first...
I've got a sniper in my garden! I have lost 3 chickens in 10 days in the middle of the day. About 6 weeks old. The 12 weeks old are doing just fine.
The first was found in our yard, a magpie was picking on it, but we didn't see what killed it. The second disappeared in the middle of the...
Argh! My hatching is not going according to plan.
Yesterday was day 0, and I found 2 pipped eggs in the morning, and then a third pipped egg yesterday evening. This morning, one chick was running around in the incubator, the other two had made no progress.
When I returned from work today -...

Hi,
I just lost my whole flock to a fox/weasel. My mistake, since I didn't shut them in properly when it was getting dark. But it shows that the predators close to my house will seize any opportunity, and might even strike during the day.
I would like my chickens to be able to free range in...
I am wondering whether I should move my chicken into our woodshed. The woodshed has a dirt floor, which is supposed to work better for the deep bedding method.
However, the centre of the woodshed is really wet in spring/autumn. During snow melt, there is almost a little fountain in the middle...
Hi,
I am new to this forum, and sadly not even a chicken owner as of yesterday, when a fox (?) took out all my beautiful 17 weeks old Hedemora chicken.
I naively thought that it was ok to leave the door open in the afternoon (after dark). I have them behind a 1m tall fence inside a large...
