Like the topic header says, I have 12 two year old hens. I am lucky if I get 2 eggs a day. The shells are often so thin on the large eggs that they crack when I pick them up or rinse them off, or a chicken steps on them before I get to them and breaks them open. I don't think its an intentional...
I'm looking for Frizzled Polish Hatching Eggs. I'm located near Louisville, KY, so if you have some, but you're not near here, I'll need to have them shipped. Not quite ready yet as I still need to get the incubator set up, but I wanted to put out feelers and find someone so I can just buy...
I was planning on setting up a few pens with a frizzle cochin bantam rooster and two or three smooth females. I know that I don't want to breed frizzle to frizzle. What I don't know is what colors I can breed to what colors safely without having funky-colored offspring. Each pen is going to...
I know in a perfect world, geese would be able to free range with a pond. What if I have a backyard with no pond? Could I use a dog pen with a water trough? Is there any way to adequately make this work out?
I have a chicken who is 8 weeks old who occasionally will open and close her mouth. It looks like a yawn, but she'll do it four or five times and then stop. Any ideas? A couple of the babies have done it too. Just wondering what it means...?
Also, she keeps shaking her head and flinging...
We have 16 chicks. Seven of them came from a feed store. Two of the 7 keep getting pasty butt. Those two are also really bony. I use a heat lamp, but based off of their body language, they're not overheating. We bought grit, but then noticed that it said not to use it until they're 2 weeks...
I hope this is the right place to post this. It was the closest fit IMO.
I have two questions:
1. How old does a frizzle cochin bantam chick need to be before you know if it's going to have curly feathers or straight?
2. If a chick has a headspot, that 100% means it'll have bars, right? It's...
Should they be given Oyster shells?
Will it hurt if I give chick grit that is of a different brand from their feed (i.e. Purina chick starter crumbles and Dumor chick grit)?
Should I mix the grit in with the crumbles, or give it separately? If separately, what should I give it in?
Should...
Can I house a duck (just one duck) with three chickens?
If the duck is a male, will it try to breed with the chickens?
What's the difference in personality in a male and a female?
I read they eat the same thing as chicks/chickens?
What keeps them from migrating south for winter...
Can I use one of the wire rabbit cages with a plastic bottom for a brooder? I would use two lamps to make sure it's warm on both ends. I was worried about them possibly getting out through the bars (they're 1 inch apart).
We have been researching chickens for about a month now and hope to get 4 chickens in the spring. Right now my favorites are silver dorkings, dominiques, silkies, and cochins (especially the partridge).
