Is our cockerel actually a hen?

Our mid-March pullets have recently begun laying in the last 6 weeks. We have 5 birds, and one looks more like a cockerel than the others (below), but we've been getting 5 fully formed eggs 3 out of 7 days this week. Last week or two we have gotten 3 eggs with paper thin shells, but now we're...

Second or third egg -stuck in feathers

We found our first egg yesterday afternoon (hooray!) and went out again to see if there was another after we heard an egg announcement. Lo and behold, there was! So we've collected 2 eggs. Then my 6 year old said, "There's something hanging from her bottom." When I looked at the hen's bottom...

    When will cockrels start crowing?

We have what appears to be a Mr among our young flock. These were hatched around the 15th of March, so they are coming up on 4 months (16 weeks). At what point should we expect to audibly confirm that this is actually a guy, not a girl? "He" is a White Rock, and quite sociable.

Good changes coming to Gwinnett County, GA

It looks like an amendment to Gwinnett county's chicken ordinances is on the table for this coming county commissioners' meeting. You can look it up, and go support it, at the gwinnett county justice & administration building, Tuesday...

How do you tell them apart?

How do you tell your birds apart? We've had 4 Buffs since 3/15 but can't tell one from another. What kinds of tricks do you have to distinguish birds in your flock? We have names for ours but can't really assign names yet. Ha!

Can we play "sex that chick" again?

We have 2 White Rocks among 4 Buff Orpingtons, and they are just above 4 weeks old. One of the Rocks is a bit "cocky" and has recently begin showing a red comb. Can you please give experienced eyes for me? Here is our potential "he". And for comparison, here is "his" clutch mate (left, facing...

    drafts vs ventilation

What differentiates ventilation from drafts? How much vent do you need and when chickens want to be away from drafts, does that mean you just close up the wall joints so there aren't cracks?

    nest boxes from drawers?

This may be a hairbrained idea, but it may be really "thrifty". Would a repurposed dresser drawer, with no bottom, using the drawer sliding action as access to eggs, work for nest boxes? This is a rough idea, first concept drawing.

    hey from GA

Hi, I'm joining y'all from Georgia, not far from Atlanta. We picked up a half dozen babies yesterday, and are new to this roller coaster. :) I've spent most of my free time today reading as much chicken stuff as I can. Apparently it's an addiction. I appreciate all the helpful info here. CC

When do we stop checking for pasty butt?

We have a half dozen chicks who are about a week old. They have not had any vent issues and I'm wondering how much longer that is a concern. Thanks.
