These girls are huge!! I knew that buff orpingtons were large birds but my barred rocks are big girls too. These are all hatchery quality birds. I still think they are gorgeous!!! My barred rocks are named Shiny and Tiny and yup I can tell them apart! Tiny is a good bit smaller than Shiny and...
I've been a chicken owner for a little over 18 months now. My new babies this year came home with me healthy and thriving from day one. Pepper fell ill Friday with a bound egg, turned out to be a lash egg. She was only 23 weeks old. I did everything I could do, consulted the great people of BYC...
I had one of my young girls, 24 weeks, go egg bound on her first egg. I found her this morning in the corner of the coop when I let them out. I brought her inside put her in the tub and soaked her in an Epsom bath. Nothing happened so I messaged her vent with oil. I could feel the egg then. I...
I got 4 new chicks by total surprise even to myself. The tack store had buff orpingtons, barred rocks and cuckoo marans. All breeds I've wanted. I have them on a good medicated feed. I've been very careful to not handle them then go handle my hens. How do I need to be sure not to put my hens at...
Found penny hanging out in the nesting box today. Thought she was laying but she's not she was sitting. I bumped her out and gathered the one egg from Rose and removed the ceramic egg too. She went back in there but I haven't gone to check on her again. She's a little young to be broody. Also I...
GOT OUR FIRST EGG!!!!!! I believe this is from my red sex link girl Rose. She's the only one with a really red comb right now. They are only about 17 weeks old! I'm so excited!!!!
I said goodbye to Jack today. He went to go live with someone I know and I can check on him occasionally. He's now got his on harem of about 30+ hens and I do believe he will be very happy there! I'll miss him but I'm not really sure that I'll miss him that much. This morning my 4 hens seem a...
I ask this because today when I was feeding them all of the hens came to eat with the rooster and my favorite hen came up and my rooster attacked her grabbing her comb and climbing on her back. They are around 13 weeks old. I have 4 gems and 1 rooster. You know that one 10% chance of getting one...
Jack crows all.the.time!!!! Doesn't bother me and so far he hasn't bothered my neighbor. He stops if I go outside and like just now I could tell he was outside my steps and crowing but I didn't go out and he's finally stopped.
I would never let him out alone with them when they are free ranging but he has gotten much better!! I think it will help that today Chica kinda got after him when he got too close. You go Chica girl! My rooster ignores him. I was kind of hoping he would be the one to get after him.
I can ride my horse all day and play with my dog for hours but what is it about chickens that make me want to just sit with a cold beer and watch. Just watch.
My run is the ground, no sand nothing just good ole natural earth. How do yall keep that fairly clean? Scooping out the coop is fine and do-able but it doesn't rain a ton here to wash in the chicken poops in the ground in the run.
*coop not 100% finished*
I'm so sad I missed a video opportunity because I didn't have my phone! Gave the chicks a roach I killed and they went nuts fighting over it!! Hilarious!!!!!
My crew was not at all interested in my corn cob left over with still plenty of corn left on it in spots. But they will flat out fight over my herbs when I dead head them. What's up with that?? Other than the obvious chocolate, candies, and such are there any absolute no no's in table scraps? I...
