    Suggested Breeds?

Hello! We’ve had chickens for several years now. We also have a 1/2 acre private pond that just looks so lonely without ducks on it. My duck knowledge is limited, but I would love a small flock that enjoys eating leeches. I would love some suggestions on breeds to look for.

    Picky Chickens rejecting feed.

I've known for a while that my chickens were picky. I've got the PVC pipe style feeders. I've been feeding Nutrena Feather Fixer for the last year since they make a mess with anything else I've tried. Any standard layer feed and they scatter it all over the floor. We currently have chickens of...

At what age is a hen considered an older layer?

Ive noticed some egg quality issues from one of my hens lately, a 2 year old TSC barred rock (at least, I think it's the barred rock - I've got a large mixed flock). She doesn't show any signs of illness, so I am wondering if she is considered an "older layer" and if egg quality issues could be...

    Incubator Noise?

I searched around and couldn't find an answer.... Do incubators usually make noise? I just set up a new Brinsea Maxi 2, the turner is off, temp is stable, but it makes a constant humming noise. It's not loud, but it's loud enough that it may bother the sensory sensitive member of the family.

    Dirt/Compost from chicken run?

After a few seasons of blight and powdery mildew I built 9 raised beds in my vegetable garden last year. The beds need to be topped off with more soil this year. Would it be a good idea to shovel some dirt from the chicken run? Last year we had mulch in the run (the free kind from a tree...

    A few issues...possibly related?

I've got a one year old Easter Egger who has been laying very thin shelled eggs. The eggs often have calcium deposits on them. The rest of the 17 hens have nice thick shelled eggs. They are on Feather Fixer now - we've had feather plucking/eating issues - and unlimited oyster shells. A few times...

    Run over a 'stream'?

I would like to expand my run this spring, but I'm running into a few issues. I do not have space on two sides of the coop, and I'd rather not take up the yard my kids play in. I'm not moving the coop, it's got electricity and I don't really want it any farther from the house because of water in...

    Guess my chick! Please :)

This little 'lady' came in an order of chicks from Meyer Hatchery. She's the meal maker chick. She doesn't look like any of the other chicks we ordered. She started out as a golden brown chipmunk. The photos here were taken at 11 days old. I'm guessing Wellsummer? (We ordered Marans...
