My chicken is eating whatever I prune including thorns

I've been pruning my garden and this is my first spring with chickens. My alpha girl thinks whatever I prune has got to be good food. LOL She follows me wherever I go and has eaten trimmings from rose branches with thorns, lilac branches- basically whatever I prune, she wants to eat. I now am...

help with possible broody pullet for new chicken owner

My 27 week old EE Clover has been laying consistently for a few weeks. She has always taken forever sitting in the nest box, so much that my BR will squawk so she can lay in the same box. Clover sits in the nest for a long, long time. I started finding a few downy feathers in the nest box the...

    Safe treatment for root weevils

Anybody use nematodes or permethrin? My girls are scratching up a storm where the obscure root weevils are. Don't know if they will be able to take care of the weevils. Don't use any chemicals. Can't remember which permethrin is natural, if it will work and whether it is safe. Thanks!

    Pathway material ideas

I would like some advice on pathways I'd like to create in the area where the 3 chickens free range.. I noticed poop on concrete looks horrible. Wondering about bark, pea gravel and 1/4" minus gravel. The later compacts but has sharp edges. Would this hurt the pullets? Sounds like pea gravel is...

Chickens chasing rabbit out of yard

Gotta love my pullets helping me get my neighbor's rabbit out of my yard. The girls helped me flush it out from the brush. After an hour of trying to catch the rabbit for the second time today, I let the girls out and they flushed it into the open so I could get it out of the yard. They've...

    Issues "sharing" a nestbox

My non laying EE pullet is pushing the BR (the only laying pullet) out of the nest box. Yesterday the non laying EE stepped on the BR's back and the BR left the nest. Today the EE tried to get into the same nest box as the BR, lifted her tail up high and shifted around and around and around...

Pecking order, treats, suddenly mean BR

Please help me understand why my barred rock who just started laying is being mean all the sudden. Could she be hormonal? She is suddenly pecking viciously at both other pullets on the roost and starting to chase them away when I have treats. My pullets are 20~21 weeks. A BR, EE and SLW...

    Egg laying "etiquette"

Do you ignore a hen sitting in the nest? Have never had chickens before. My BR Willow laid her first egg yesterday! There was a lot of talking from all the pullets. Very loud. Today I walked into the coop to bring in some sod, grubs and tomatoes from gardening. Willow was in her nest box...

    Chickens chasing squirrels

Two of my pullets are chasing squirrels out of the yard. Oddly, the pullet at the bottom of the pecking order initiates the chase. Does anyone else's chickens chase squirrels? The BR at the top of the pecking order does not participate which is interesting. I love that they chase squirrels...

    Advice on PVC polycarbonate roof

I have no experience building. The roof my friend started with was 1/2" plywood tacked in a few places. When it rained, the plywood warped and I wonder if I should replace it with PVC or something else? Any advice? I bought tar paper for the roof but do t have shingles. Had planned on leaving...

    Hens going into the coop!

Am new to having chickens, but several fantastic steps for us. Have been supervising my 18 week old hens free ranging for a few weeks. Took a while because I needed to reinforce parts of the fence and am still tweaking the coop. Plus I was afraid they would fly into my neighbor's yard who has a...

    Coop ladder problem

My hens are slipping on their ladder which is a 5' wide cedar. The 1" slats are about 5" apart. The hens toes are curling under. Long story short, they will not use the ladder. They will fly up to roost but will not fly down. I have to carry each one down. The ladder is also probably too...

    Window size

Please give me advice on a window size for a coop where the sides are 4' high by 6' long. I thought I only needed small windows, but is bigger better? I live in the Pacific Northwest, so we do get rain in winter. The windows will have a way to close them and we will put some 2" vents under the...

I am having a coop built for my 3 chickens and wonder what is a great height for the run and the coop? Looking at an "ideal" height for happy chickens. I have an Americauna, Barred Rock and SLW.
