I'm confused about my electric fence's power

I have my poultry fence (50ft) wrapped around my coop-shed. The tester says 2 Kv, does anyone know if that's enough to deter raccoons from getting in the windows. My Gallagher charger says .26 joules and .40 store joules...up to 25 miles. I don't have the ground rod as deep as it can go and...

I'm looking for ideas for a way to build a simple tree bench for protection below

At first I was thinking of like an extended tarp from the privacy fence to the HUGE tree but then I came across an image of a tree bench. I need something quick because they have no cover at all in their new area until the bushes and trees grow enough. I free range in the city, and I do have a...

    I have an obese chicken

I rescued her from some "immigrant nomads" that didn't take care of her or her sisters. They actually jumped the fence. So she went a long time without food and now she's so overweight I was shocked when I picked her up. I want to stop feeding all my hens for a few days...they have plenty of...

I have a concrete floor but hate it...I'm wondering if anyone has used those rubber mats over concrete?

At a previous house, I put dirt down but I moved so not sure how that worked out. My hens are currently living in my garage with straw but I am not sure if there are other ideas I'm not thinking of. TIA!

Brought chicken inside, and all of a sudden she is emitting the worst odor I have ever smelled..any ideas?

She was laying down when I brought her in...she cannot stand. I know she's over 10 yrs old. I was feeding her baby food (rice cereal) and when I went back to refeed her, the odor was horrible, in my entire basement. I can't even begin to explain how awful the smell was. I"m just wondering...

Update on my chicken with sour crop/impacted crop

She started eating yesterday! I credit her recovery to the Slippery Elm treatment. Her crop was hard until I started the Slippery Elm, but of course I was still giving her the Difulcan and the Sulfadiazine which is an antifungal and antibacterial. I was taking her to the Vet to be fed every...

Has anyone ever taken their hen to the Vet for sour crop?

I'm taking mine today. Not sure if they can help. It says the Vet can flush out the crop...I wonder how they would do that. My vet is happy to see chickens, I feel very lucky. They have a rotating staff of vets, I think. But if they can flush the crop, I wonder if we could.

I need temporary/maybe not temporary fencing ideas to hide my chickens

After 30 years of having chickens, I moved to the city. I read I could have 8 chickens but it turns out I can only have 4. The other issue is I have an 18 year old goose who is special to me and a rooster that I adopted because he was homeless. I don't mind adhering to the 4 chickens once...

How much grass for 10 chickens to graze without killing the grass?

I am moving and found a house with an additional separate lot and it's .2 acre so that equals 134ft wide by 134ft. I want to make sure they won't have it bald in 3 months and have nothing left to eat. I can only find recommended square foot per coop. TIA!

Helping goose get into kiddie pool

My goose is 18 and although she looks fine and she walks fine, she has stopped getting in her kiddie pool and as you know it's hot. I have one of those 3 ft kiddie pools. She used to just put one foot on the edge and hop in for the last 18 years, so I'm wondering if anyone has some ideas to...

My goose will be 18 in May and after all these years I learned....

That goose eggs make incredibly creamy custard ice cream. I had some eggs frozen in my freezer and needed to use them and wow, it was the best vanilla ice cream ever. Now I wish I hadn't given all those goose eggs away.

A hangable, chargeable light bulb-no electricity needed

I found these on Amazon and loved them so much, I wanted to share. They can be hung in your coop and they come with a small remote. I take the remote with me to the coop and the bulbs light up my 12x20 coop wonderfully. If you forget the remote they have a tiny button you can push too but I...

I planted grass for my chickens but I think grubs are killing my lawn...I thought

I thought the chickens kept grubs in check but the grubs are under the ground. Also I read Milky spore can be used safely around the chickens. Was wondering if anyone had success with that. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else had grubs with chickens roaming their lawn. The chickens...

    Roses and chickens

So I read that chickens won't eat "knock out" roses...well today I found out different...they snipped off the rose buds even and ate those. It looked like they used scissors....I'm assuming when the bushes grow bigger, they can't reach the roses but not sure...Any suggestions for making an...

Has anyone heard about antibiotics no longer being sold at Farm Stores

I'm just giving a heads up, I was told at Tractor Supply that Tylan 50 will no longer be sold in stores, but then I read that no antibiotics will be available without a prescription anymore because people are using it for Covid. Has anyone else heard anything? Out of 8 stores, I found Tylan 50...

Antibiotics for chickens? Where to find?

My chicken has finally exhibited rattling sounds so I'm assuming she has an upper respiratory infection, could someone PLEASE tell me where to find antibiotics and what dosages? TIA She's trying to lay an egg and can't so I thought she was eggbound but when I had her in the bathroom, I could...

Hen with very thin quills and missing feathers and anemic

I am at a loss as to what is wrong with my bird. She has lost a lot of weight, looks anemic and has feather loss that I have never seen before. I looked for lice but I see nothing but I live alone and have no one to actually hold her. Any ideas? How to figure this out? Thanks

Lice or Mites...The myriad methods are confusing, what is the best chemical treatment

I moved to the city and my birds cannot find a suitable dust bathing area. I made them one but they do not like it. I will have to redo. In 30 years of chickens I've NEVER had mites or lice. So I'm late on thinking that is what this is. They've been wormed and had corid twice but I have a...

If you bring in a sick chicken and it's 12 degrees

Does it hurt to put it back out after it's been in a warm house? (once the chicken is well of course) I have always wondered about that. I'm not sure anyone knows, google doesn't or I'm not asking the right question.

    Look how cute this is

and they are calling it a duck, which I find funny! I don't find many cute things related to geese so just wanted to share. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0991YQP2H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
