Why would a hen occasionally lay an egg with just the membrane or with a very soft shell? When does the shell form?
My husband found this egg this morning, partially covered with a thin shell and part just membrane. It happens occasionally with our 30+ hens.
My husband, son and I are learning all over again. We purchased 33 two to three week old meat birds this spring. We ended up with 29 in the freezer. They look like small turkeys.

This rooster was accidentally put in with the pullet chicks when we bought them this spring. I am beginning to think he is a mixed breed, since I have been unable to find any images that look like him on breed charts.
