My 3 yr old Golden Star, a reliable layer, has developed a large swelling under the vent closer to her legs. She is walking, but looks like she has a loaded diaper on. I thought she might be egg bound so I soaked her in a warm bath and stuck my finger up the vent quite far without ever feeling...
My bother found a White Silkie Roo and an Amber Silkie Pullet deep in a canyon while jogging. They were starving and came out of a bush to him, obviously dumped, they are young. I can't keep the Roo, I'm in the city right next to a school and I'm over my limit now for chickens. I thought I...
Hi I'm in San Diego Cali. My brother was out jogging in a big canyon area and came across two starving chickens, obviously dumped out there. He jogged them both back to his truck and of course brought them to my house. Boy were they hungry and thirsty. Two Silkies,an Amber pullet and a White...
I threw out some mixed nuts for the squirrels and I saw the chickens went crazy over them so I tried to break them up into smaller pieces but my favorite chicken "STAR" is sick this morning. She won't come out of run, so I picked her up to look at her vent and she vomited clear liquid. She had a...
My brother was jogging in a large canyon area and came across two starving chickens. Obviously dumped by someone. SO he picked them up and jogged back to his truck, a good mile away, with the hungry Silkies. He brought them to my house and they are about to come out of quarantine tomorrow...
Ever since my new chicks, now 7 wks old, were released into the coop my 2 yr olds hens have stopped laying in the coop. Everyone gets along pretty well. The chicks insist on using the same roosting bar, even though I put a lower one for them. Only the white leghorn pecks at them, but they curl...
My three 3wk old chicks are very flighty. Every time I take the wire off the top of the brooder the black star flies out. So I put them into my wire broody buster cage in the big girl's coop. I'm going to let them run around the big coop during the day when the herd is out free ranging then I...
My 1 1/2 yr old white leghorn who had been a great everyday layer for a year went through a heavy molt and afterward was only laying soft-shell eggs. Today she was sleeping in her favorite napping spot for far too long so I went to check her. She was lethargic and let me pick her up which she...
Most my girls went through molt in Dec and Jan and I was feeding them Feather Fixer and Flock Raiser, since they started laying again I've been getting some shells less eggs which I never got before. I had Oyster shell on the side but it looks like it isn't been touched. I'm not able to...
I have a Silkie and a Blue Wyandotte that are a tag team broodies. Sometimes one goes broody then the other will also. Right now my silkie has been sitting on fake eggs for about two weeks. I would like to slips 3 chicks under her at night, but I'm worried that the Wyandotte will try to steal...
I searched archives but couldn't find anything about chicken's comb going pale and shriveling up during a molt. My 15 month old White Leghorn hen, who has always had a beautiful large bright red comb has gone into a hard molt, and her comb has just flopped over on itself, shriveled up and gone...
Lost a member of the family today! My Light Brahma hen, a family favorite, was just found dead for unexplained reasons. She went into the pen last night perfectly fine, ate her snack of scratch as usual. This morning I went out about 9:00am to let the chickens out of the run, she was under a...
Hi ya'll, I'm having great success with my auto door on the secure coop which opens at 9am. Now I'm thinking about putting an electric gate opening arm on the metal walk in gate leading into the run that uses a remote control. I can then open it from the house to let them free range, then close...
How do you all keep your White Silkies so clean and white? Mine loves to dust bathe and can't seem to keep her 'powder puff' clean. She was looking very yellow around neck and head, so I gave her a bath but that yellow stain on her feathers does not want to go away. I used puppy shampoo.
I have a 7 month old white Silkie that I thought started laying small light tan eggs two weeks ago, but today I caught my Blue Wyandotte on the nest and waited till she was done, and lo and behold she was the one laying the small tan egg. Such a small egg for such a big bird!! Now I'm wondering...
As a newbie to chickens and BYC I have loved reading about the different feed suggestions. So I went to the feed store and got some whole Barley and Oat groats and some BOSS to stir up into my own chicken scratch. The cashier at the feed store, who has raised chickens for a long time, and has...
I have 9 chickens of various breeds. When a leghorn and gold star started to lay I switched feed from Purina chick starter to layer feed. But now after reading that I have late bloomers I'm wondering what to do, should I switch to something else?
I think I went overboard trying to make my chicks friendly! One of my Golden Stars gets jealous whenever I pick up another chicken( they are five months old today. This afternoon I was holding the Silkie, and "STAR" the Golden jumped up onto my shoulder which she has done before, but when I...
My Blue Wyandotte is 4 months old and her comb is perfectly flat. She never had much of a comb but it seems the older she gets the flater her comb gets. There is no blood on it like she might be rubbing it , and it don't see any bugs of fungus. Anybody know about this?
I have nine chickens 17 weeks old, two white leghorns, I recently switched to the Purina vegetarian Layena food, and almost immediately started getting small white eggs. I'm pretty sure their not from my white Silkie. Could this be because the soy in the feed? Purina does not get good reviews on...
