I'm building a woods open air coop mini, which will have about 32ft sq for about 6 egg birds, and be moved daily unlike some of the larger ones that are moved less frequently. What are your thoughts on if I need a run during the 3 warmer seasons? (Current plan is to have it stationary in winter...
My local feed provider doesn't have a layer game bird feed. He only has the grower and starter. I'm wanting to just add the oyster. My question is what ratio should I add (for example, one tablespoon per cup)? Should I offer it in a separate bowl for them to take as they desire? I know too much...
I had a batch of 8 yesterday. 7 are happy and energetic. The last to hatch was significantly smaller than the others. It got its head stuck in the shell and was unable to remove the shell (it was clearly already hatched otherwise.) i removed the shell without further complication. However it...
I know various versions of this have been asked before, but mine is slightly different. According to my temperature monitor, I lost power in the middle of the night, and it was out about 5 1/2 hours. I thought about the eggs when I woke up and drove to a friend's house to plug them in. So they...
I turned the artificial light off for a week while I went on vacation. As I expected, my girls stopped laying. However I have been back for almost a week with their 14 hours of light restored and they haven't started laying again. How long will it take?
Not so much a question as a comment - my girls are just starting to lay eggs and its so weird - they will sit right next to each other in the sandbox, lay their eggs at the same time, and then make their egg call at the same time. Do yours do that? I'm loving all the quirky things I'm finding...
2 day old. I have two in the brooder, so it's not lonely. The temperature seems fine -they're running around and playing rather than huddled close to the light or away from it... although they are periodically lying down. They have water and ground up crumbles... plus my kids are watching it...
I made all the mistakes and didn't find out until too late... I think. I didn't have a humidity detector at first and was at about 65% for the first week. Then I was adding purified, but not distilled water. Then I candled a couple of times early on. Then 1 day after lockdown my humidity dropped...
I'm a mommy of 5 boys, and a full-time engineer. I recently started becoming more interested in gardening/health and what goes better with a garden than chickens? I view my future flock as my compost manufacturing plant with an added benefit of eggs. As an engineer, I tend to over-analyze...
Hey I'm new to chickens and coops and the whole nine yards and I figured BEFORE i build my tractor, i should run it by yall so youcan correct me now instead of me leanring the hard way. i promise i tried to do the research but wasn't finding the answers since my search words were so generic :)...
