Mites? Lice? Any idea what it is?
I have two coops. I thought my laying hens might have mites due to some suddenly missing feathers at the base of the tail (no rooster). However, looking them over I couldn’t directly see any issues other than the missing feathers. I figured I would check the...
I have not seen poop like this before. Do I need to worry? This is from a 2ish month old Silkie. It has been warm. She’s only been eating crumbles and some meal worms. She is acting and looks normal.
Pics of poop below!
I have one who lays larger eggs that tend to have a thinner shell and calcium deposits on one end. They tend to feel a little gritty on the outside.
Additionally, a few have had a small hole in the end when I collect them. I’ve had some broken eggs recently, so I’m assuming someone pecked...
I have a bantam chick that is not doing well. She is 1.5-2 weeks old and doesn’t seem like she is growing. She has been somewhat lethargic (sitting mostly. Sometimes with eyes closed) but is eating/drinking. Her crop seemed huge.
My first concern was some type of impacted crop. I tried...
It mostly looks dark brown/black but there is a little bit of lighter brown chipmunk stripes on the back. Dark legs. Can’t really tell about what kind of comb.
Breed ideas?
Also, Sebright?
And OEGB?
I’m looking to add a second coop and have been looking at the one on Home Depot’s blog. Has anyone built this coop?
http://blog.homedepot.com/free-plans-for-an-awesome-chicken-coop/
If so, I’m hoping for some feedback.
1. How many birds do you have in it?
2. What’s your climate? If it’s...
I’m struggling with frostbite. I’ve read a million articles about what to do and I’m not sure what else to do.
I have frostbite showing in at least 4 birds. Mostly little black bits on the comb, but also some white tips on combs. The worst is a Dominique who looks like she got her waddles wet...
I think one of my chickens got knocked out last night. She got up at like 2am and went into the nesting box (I have cameras in the coop that record based on movement or sound).
On the way back to the roost, she was a little low and ran into the ramp instead of landing on it (from the side)...
I got my fist egg today from a Gold Laced Wyandotte!!
I have a few more who look close and a couple that I think will be awhile. Luckily I think one that will be ready soon is an Easter Egger, so that will be cool! They are all just over 21 weeks. Everyone was gathered around and watching...
I discovered a lump on my 13-week-old chicken yesterday. It is the size of a quarter or so and flattish (not round like a grape tomato, but more like a ... small cookie in shape?). It is firmish but soft. I see no outward wound, scab, blood, etc. When pushing feathers aside, I see just a yellow...
We recently converted our 12x11 shed into a coop with storage and added a covered run (to hopefully allow them to go out in bad weather/winter - we are in New England).
I got 12 chicks, but I probably should have started with 6 because I already want to get more and they are only 7.5 weeks...
Scanning through my photos, I think I got many but not all of them. So this is the first batch. Any help identifying gender would be appreciated!
Silver Laced Wyandotte #1
SLW #2
Gold Laced Wyandotte #1 (if there are any cockerels I'm guessing this could be one?)
GLW #2
Barred...
I ordered two "assorted brown layers." I think one is a Barred Rock. This is the other; is this a Plymouth Rock? The legs are a paler yellow than my Wyandotte. She is 5-6 weeks old.
5-6 week old chick. Yesterday she was doing something weird with her neck. It looked kind of like she was trying to throw up or something. She also kept laying down and sometimes that involved one foot curling up. I isolated her and gave her electrolytes and today she's angry with me (trying to...
My chicks just transitioned into my coop. I had a small two level roost that was in the brooder. I moved that roost to the coop along with two other higher roosts. The lowest is about 6" high and there are options between that and maybe 18" high along with a higher roost intended for when they...
We are new to having chickens and are finishing up our coop/run.
I'm trying to figure it the best way to secure the run. Some people say bury wire 1-2' and others use an apron of wire around the outside. People don't do both do they?
I'm leaning toward adding an apron of hardware cloth on top...
I have 12 chicks that are almost 3 weeks old. They have been in a brooder in my house, but they are clearly outgrowing it and need more space. They are my first, so I have no adult chickens to worry about. The coop is ready, but we are still finishing the run. It has been 60s/70s during the day...
I am brand new to BYC and chickens. I got a dozen two and a half weeks ago: two Gold Laced Wyandotte, two Silver Laced Wyandotte, two Dominiques, two Black Australorps, two Easter Eggers, and two "assorted brown egg layers."
We are working on the coop now and hope to have it ready in the next...
Sorry for another post, but more breed questions!
I have three chicks that look alike to me--with the exception that one appears to have a single comb and the other two don't. Does it look like these could be two Dominique and the single comb is a Barred Rock? I ordered two Dominique and two...
I know it is early, but I am incrediblly curious. I only have two Gold Laced Wyandottes. One has been bigger from the beginning and slightly darker in color. As they've gotten older, the color and size difference has gotten more noticeable. My other chicks look much more consistent.
Is this...
