So, I eggtopsied one of the eggs that did not hatch under my silky hen and this is what I found. Its brain is on the outside of its head and its beak is crooked. I have never seen a chick so deformed.
Sorry if anyone is squeamish about the pics.
I got a new job today, so my husband bought me a “Congratulations on your new job” present.
A six ft tall B.A.C. (Big ass chicken)!
LOL - maybe it will scare off the predators!
So, I hatched this beautiful bird and have decided I need to create a new chicken breed in her honor, the “Wendy”
LOL!
In all seriousnesd, she really is a gorgeous bird. The hen was a Rhode Island Red and the rooster is a Lavender Orpington.
These pictures really don’t do her justice. Her...
i have a batch of eggs in the bator and the first chick hatched nearly 24 hours before the next one. No sooner than #2 was out of the shell, #1 went after it, pecking, jumping on it, yanking in its wings, etc.
I took #1 out and put it in the brooder where it cried and threw a fit.
Fast forward...
Collecting eggs tonight and I find this on the ground right in front of the door to the coop. Looks like just a teeny tiny chicken egg. What do you all think?
I am reading conflicting advice and wanted to post real quick and see what the consensus says...
School of thought 1: Add the chicken eggs into the incubator 7 days after the duck eggs with the same temps and humidity so they all hatch at the same time
School of thought 2: Put them in all at...
This weekend I am headed to Mexico for two weeks. I am going to a small island and one of the locals has asked me to bring him an incubator so that he can hatch eggs and give chicks to the very poor people who live there. Going to be a lot of fun teaching him how to incubate the eggs! Just hope...
Reba McHentire & Dixie Chick have successfully hatched out 5 babies. They both sat on the eggs and the chicks go back and forth between them. I love watching them jump all over the hens and listening to the hens talk to the chicks!
Going to be interesting to see what they turn out looking...
My first hen brooded chick hatched yesterday! It is half silkie, half Lavender Orpington. Since I had two Silkie hens sitting on the same nest I don’t know if this chick is from my blue or my splash Silkie.
Was having an issue with a rooster who wanted to keep sneak attacking me from behind. That is, until my crack squad of ninja attack turkeys took over. LOL, now if he even looks at me funny the turkeys take him out!
Anyone ever had 2 chickens incubating a nest of eggs?
I currently have 2 silkies who are both sitting on a nest of eggs, there is always at least one of them on the eggs, if one goes out to eat, the other tucks all the eggs under her until the other one comes back.
Hopefully it won't be a...
I wasn't in the market for a new pig, but when one that was being mistreated was put in my sights, I couldn't say no.
Meet Veronica, Roni for short.
She is named after Veronica from the Archie comics - all of my pigs have comic strip character names, I also have Betty Boop and Jet Ranger.
I want to chronicle trying to save my little chick from a case of wry neck.
His story is that he is from my chickens and was hatched here, he is a Lavender Orpington chick and was 3 weeks old last weekend.
I did not notice any issues with the chicks until I got home from work on Monday and...
I came home tonight to find one of my 3 week old chicks with wry neck. I did not notice any issues with any of them before tonight. I am at a loss of what to do for this chick. They are being fed high quality chick crumbles.
Help!!
Ran in to refill the food and water for the chicks in the brooder before going to work, somehow one of them had gotten out, I didn't see it and I stepped on it. It jumped up and ran and then quickly died. I feel just horrible about it!
This chick is a Lavender Orpington/Rhode Island Red cross. These pics look much ore red/rusty than she actually is. The color is more of a Maroon shade. I can't wait to too see what she ends up looking like when an adult!
