I’m saying cockerel for this one:
And pullet here:
Definitely would prefer one of each so we can see the eating aspect of a slow growing heritage breed, but the hens are so pretty!
hi all!
I butchered for the first time today- hoping you can help me answer some questions that came up.
First, how long can I take to pluck before I need to move on to removing the organs? It takes me a long to pluck by hand, but I’m worried I willing compromise the meat by not gutting...
Hello all!
I'm about to start harvesting my first batch of meaties (Rainbow Rangers, then Grey Rangers later). I know some of them breathe heavily, but it seems like it is from the weight they lug around, rather than an infection or defect. They do sneeze right when I first put food down, but I...
hi all!
I was hoping people had growth/feather development pics from their chicks. I’m curious about how mine will develop and when I can expect to see the pattern start emerging and be fully developed.
Thanks!
hi there!
I was wondering what everyone does when they get new chicks with regard to coccidiosis treatments.
Do you automatically treat? Or wait for signs?
If the first, preventive course or treatment course? What age?
hello BYC family,
I was wondering if Twentse has any sexing characteristics. I have one that is chipmunk w/ defined V on head, and the second is more red with blurred lines. Thoughts?
hi all!
I received 3 of these beauties a few days ago and was wondering what those who are familiar with the breed look for as markers for sexing while the chick grows.
I’ve heard lots of different things for other breeds- comb/wattle development, early wing/tail feathers, barring, etc...
hi all!
I was going to treat my flock with wazine 17, But I only have 15 birds. It says for everyone 100 birds, use one fluid ounce in 1 gallon of water. I just want to check that it was still OK to make a batch with a ratio of one fluid ounce to 1 gallon of water for a flock so small, or if I...
hello byc!
My chicken had a run in with a dog today- chick snuck through the fence.
No visible marks or damage, but is wheezing a bit and doesn't draw breath in a smooth fashion. Plus, seems like the breathing is labored.
Doesn't seem like evidence of an air sac leak has materialized yet...
Hi wonderful BYC community,
I bought a batch of 13 gray and rainbow ranger meat birds back on 15 August.
This is my first time raising chickens and I have a mixed flock of egg layers and the meat birds. I've been feeding them an 18% protein feed and they are now at four weeks old. I don't...
Just for fun...
Please tell me what you think they are and most importantly WHY! From the big details to the little. I'm trying to train my eyes to what you are looking for.... Thanks!
Today my favorite pullet suffered a cat attack. I've looked her over and there are some puncture wounds on her neck they aren't bleeding heavily, but they are bruised. Additionally she has a gash on her thigh. I treated it with antiseptic, is there anything else I should do like skin glue or...
could you show me what you're looking for in a chick? Pictures would be great. Young chicks and then when they start to feather out. Do you know that it'll look the way it should when it grows up by the pattern of its down?
hello all you super knowledgeable backyard chicken keepers out there!
I have a pair of four week old Easter Eggers and I'm wondering if you can tell me if there's anything to expect from their patterns or coloration.
Do you just have to wait-and-see to find out whether you have hens order...
I have about a dozen rainbow and Grey Rangers. Is there a way to tell them apart -cockerel or pullet- based on their coloration when they are only a few weeks old for either type?
(Don't mind the black ones in this picture they're supposed to be wyandottes)
I have a gold laced wyandotte that has lost weight rapidly and isn't growing at all. I got it about six days ago. On day two, I noticed it seemed quite tired. This got worse over the next two days.
Last night I noticed it had a completely runny poop that was between brown and mustard yellow...
So, I got this chick on 12 August. And it already had feathers on its wings but fluff on its body. So I'm thinking it was about 10 days old or so at that time? Either way, now it's about Four weeks old. You could see the comb coming in. rooster? I know certain breeds have more prominent combs.
Hello wonderful backyard chicken community. I've been lurking for a while now, but now that I have chicks I have all kinds of questions.
Can you take a look at this and tell me what you think it is and what I should do? It is on a three week old gold laced wyandotte.
