We have a Brody hen, she sat for 5 weeks and the eggs where not good. We went to TSC and brought home 6 Cornish crosses. She mothered them for 4 weeks. When we took care of our other meaties, I put the 4 remaining in the tractor. It’s been 48 hours and Moma has been sitting on the fresh eggs...

    Letting meat rest

We have done a few batches of Cornish crosses now and have found the breasts to be a bit chewy or tough when cooked. We have been doing zero resting, basically dispatch pluck, part out and freeze. Everything I’ve been reading on line shows resting for the entire bird. Should we let the parts...

    Ultimate isolation/sick bay/broody pen

Sorry if this has been posted before but I’d like to get some discussion from more SR chicken keepers, and I can’t find a good answer. I’m guessing it’s because most people go small quick and easy on a isolation area. I moved my nest boxes lower as I was having issues with a couple hens...

Sympathy molt? Or just winter brake?

I see this asked a lot this time of year but just wanted a bit more advice..... We have 23 chickens. One is a rooster, 10 are only about 24 weeks old. This leaves 12 mature hens. Of these 12 3 (SLW) are about 40 weeks old (2-28-18 hatch date) the other 9 are at least a full year old. Most of...

We had a broody I let her son five eggs. She’s in isolation for the last three weeks. Today is hatching day! Of the five she pushed out one and broke it about a week ago. Two more hatched today while I was at work and she seems to have killed them already. One is trying to hatch now. Should I...

    Coop repairs and new run

Our coop was built on the dirt with 4x4 and decking for a retaining wall. After 30 years (lumber is stamped with a production date) it has shifted down the hill some... I “found” some 2x2x4 blocks, and fixed that today. Pushed the down hill side back up 1/2” I left the wood wall.

    Pig heat plate brooder?

20 years ago I had pigs as a 4h project. We used a heat plate under the shavings for the new borns. Wondering if anyone has used this plate that has been collecting dust for 20 years for chicks? Temps seam to be about the same as the chick plate I bought for our now 6 week olds. Trouble is we...

    Egg bound pullet?

These are not the best pictures but this is my BR pullet (she’s a late bloomer, I think anyhow). She has been standing in the nesting box a lot lately, even at mid day with everyone else outside. She is eating for sure, as I’ve seen her, her crop seams softish. She is up and moving around and...

    Frost bite?

So I was feeling lazy and didn’t go out till about a half hour ago. Over night around 0f the girls seamed good last night. This one hen has been low bird in the pecking order for a while now, she has been sleeping alone on the floor in I pile of deep shavings. I haven’t thought much of it. Most...

    Snow in the coop

So I forgot to close the windows to the coop last night. I went out this morning there was a bit of snow under both windows. I put them both up half way. I just went out and plowed some snow, and check on the girls while I was out. There was quite a bit more snow inside. I closed both (one...

Am I doing more harm then good?

We have a hen that has been getting picked on. At bed time all have been on the roosting poles but her. She has been tucked in under the poop tray. We have been putting her on the pole with some of the others mostly because it’s 13f outside! Calling for a low of 1 tonight. Are we better of...

    No comb at 30 weeks?

I have a brown and a white Cochin I’m guessing full sized as they are the same size as my RIR and eggers. Anyway the white one (snowball) has a full comb the brown one (Big foot) has none? Both came with 4 eggers (only 3 left) and those have pea combs as expected. I’m not sure if any are...
