    Black Copper Marans chicks' wings--different?

I noticed the wings on my few days old BCM chicks stick out from their bodies. All 5 of them look like this. None of the other 37 chicks of 6 other breeds have wings that point out like this, including Cuckoo Marans. Is this common with BCM? It's cute, not a problem, but I'm curious!

    Diary of a Chicken Tender...

I'm a few days behind on starting this, been busy with the new peeps! We were expecting a couple of farm store chick orders on April 4. Having ordered over 40 chicks, I made 3 brooders in the barn, each with a 12 x 24 Mama's heating pad setup. April 3 I had a message from Farm & Fleet that my...

3 days old -- Speckled Sussex, Welsummer or EEs?

Brought home 33 chicks I ordered from the farm store. Ordered 5 of each and they sent 6 of each! The Light Brahmas and Cuckoo Marans and some of the EEs are obvious. But there's one yellow without feathers on her feet, so she's not a Brahma. And I'm not sure how to differentiate between all...

41 chicks coming! Critique the nursery!

We pick up our chicks on April 4. Ordered 41 total! For their first week or so, I decided to divide them into 3 pens, 2x5 ft. Got 12x24" Mama's heating pads in each one, a vertical nipple waterer, and a chick feeder with hardware cloth to help reduce waste. Each feeder has a plastic jar not...

    Please help end an argument!

Hubby and I are not seeing eye to eye on flock management. New to chickens in the spring of 2016. Last year we had 7 hens, a rooster (all first year birds) and a mild winter. We are in central Illinois. Had one day where 3 birds got mild frostbite. Used a heat lamp on the coldest of days. This...

    Favorite coop cleaning tools

After trying various combos of brooms and scoops, I think I found my favorite combination of coop cleaning tools. A bench broom and dust pan flick poos right over the pine pellets into the pan. Then the squeegee works perfectly on the poop boards! My coop floor is about 5 foot by almost 6 foot...

    Look What I Found!

My 2016 hens started molting in October. Then we added 4 new girls hatched in spring. So between molting, stress of new birds, and shorter days, eggs production nearly stopped. Two newbies started laying, and my White Rock started again, so I was getting 1-3 eggs daily out of 11 hens! Then my...

    Longtime Lurker, Newbie Member

Finally joined BYC, although I come here often for advice! Great website. Now for the intro. In the spring of 2016, my son asked to bring home a couple of chicks from his FFA's hatch project. We live in the country on 2 acres with horses, cats and dogs, and we had thought about chickens several...
