    I feel like a shmuck ):

Hi guys! Big sad rant coming up! This isn't my first rodeo hatching chicks, I've done it a handful of times with decent success! However this is my first time where I'm in a situation to keep some of the chicks instead of give them away- we moved more rural and lots of neighbors have chickens...

    2 week baby looking off

Just hatched three little buggers. The two biggest are running around and being very chicken-like, but the smallest has been more and more tired lately. I mean, she's always been less rambunctious, but she falls asleep where she stands pretty much everywhere now. I see her eat and drink, I make...

Chick doing some hardcore panting and deep breaths

(this is a repost for this section, i want to get an answer asap) I adjusted the light for the first-week-change (they're one week old as of a few hours from now), but one chick is panting her bottom off. If she's hot, she won't stop hanging out underneath the light, and she knows how to drink...

Chick doing some hardcore panting and deep breaths

I adjusted the light for the first-week-change (they're one week old as of a few hours from now), but one chick is panting her bottom off. If she's hot, she won't stop hanging out underneath the light, and she knows how to drink and I've even dipped her beak in a few times. I'm probably beating...

    Clicking?

So, chicks can apparently click. What does that mean? Are they stressed when they click?

    Chick problems

So, I'm sure these are all things covered before, and I've bet I've read about them, but I can't find those old posts and thought this would be 10x times easier. Just hatched 3 little chicks yesterday, and either all three are pooping green or one is and the rest just can't poop. One chick was...

Anything to help chick with curled toes?

Hatched this morning, and I've been hopinh to see some improvement... but the poor thing keeps having to practically walk on the opposite side of her foot. She's still flopping around the incubator getting dry. What's this bandaid trick I read about? Or any other methods to hopefully fix it?

    Should I intervene...?

It's day 24, and this morning I finally heard chirping from one of the eggs (none have hatched so far). It was weak, but there. Some time later, I check to find a small pip! No membrane clearly showing, but there's a crack there alright. I've heard a little bit of cheeping since, but... none in...

    Hope isn't lost! Day 24

I thought my temp might've been low, but jeesh! I've just been keeping the eggs in the bator as a "just in case" thing, didn't really think they were alive. A friend came over yesterday and we chipped off some shell on the air cell, and lo and behold, a chick was moving against the membrane! So...

    day 23, help?

thought i saw no aircell when i checked yesterday, which i guess means they internally pipped but.... theres no cheeping. are they done? EDIT: double checked, and i was wrong- theres definitly an air cell. still interested in answers though.

They're late, so... when should I candle?

They were only due yesterday, but there's still no rocking or cheeping... I would definitely not throw them out till day four or so, and after making sure, but I was wondering... humidity wise, I still shouldn't open the incubator, right (even if I do rewet the wash cloth)? At least not till...

New way to deal with hatching stress

It's Hatch Day, and I've been biting my nails and setting up a camp-out spot for tonight (i think they'll come a little late, temp problems). I'm so nervous! This is only my second hatch, and the first time things didn't go so well... I just went out to check on the humidity and lo and behold...

    Lockdown- YES!

Off my rocker with excitement- today is lockdown day and I need some way to keep me from wetting myself. Second time hatching (first time problems happened early on, had a 1/4 hatch rate ) and things are looking pretty good. Most of the buggers are fully developed and seemed to be moving as of...

    Ahhhh! Temp problems!

Made a homemade incubator, and put the eggs in today- but it won't hold a steady temp! I've been in and out of the playroom every 10 minutes adjusting things to keep it in the 99-101 range, but today was suddenly hotter than all the days before and it keeps trying to jump up-- all my worries...

    Light bulbs

Ok guys, making another incubator since we got rid of the last one quite some time ago... It was bigger than the one I'm making now, and I used a 100watt regular light bulb and hardly had to turn it off at all- the room the bator was in had no windows and the temp barely fluxed in the bator...

    Porcelain light socket?

Happen to come home with a plastic one for my 'bator instead of a porcelain one. I'll probably go switch it out, but I'm curious to know why it needs to be porcelain? Will the plastic melt after being heated for so long, or let out chemicals or something?

    Rats?

Hatching my second batch of chicks- but this time, there'll be pet rats in the room where the brooder goes. They get some free-range time in my room, and all though they'll be under careful watch, I'm still alittle worried : P Would rats and chicks try to hurt each other or...? Thanks in...
