    Opinion on pullet or roo

One of my buff ladies? is changing quickly and although I don't mind either way, I was wondering if I have a rooster. In the first pic, she's on the right and in the last picture she's in the middle. They are 17 weeks old.

Graphic photo - lost one of my girls yesterday

I lost a chicken yesterday, in the evening right by our deck. Our door is maybe 20 feet from where something came out from under the deck and tore her up. All the other chickens were close my. It was during the daylight and we had our small dogs in and out several times while the chickens were...

Newbie here and now I have a broody hen!

I've had a hen go broody, any advice/ideas on how to break her? I've gone from getting 12 to 15 eggs a day from my girls, to 6. I've been trying ice packs under her but I think it's so hot here that she is enjoying it! LOL

    Just found my first egg!!!

I just went to let the chickens out to free range for a while and decided to check the new nesting boxes. I discovered that one of them gave me my first egg! Woohoo!!! They will be 18 weeks old tomorrow. I will just assume that first eggs may be smallish although this one is kind of cute. The...

Nesting boxes are ready, are the chickens?

We got the nesting boxes installed in the coop. I put some straw in the boxes but I'm wondering if I should get fake eggs? My girls are 18 weeks old. I have Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks and Easter Eggers. If I don't put something in the nests, will they just know to lay there?

    Free range before laying?

I've read that the best way to ensure your chickens lay in their nests is to keep them in the coop/run area until they feel that the nesting boxes are the place to lay. I have been letting them free range some for several weeks (the chickens are about 12 weeks old now) but not letting them out...

    Nesting box recommendations

I've finished everything but the nesting boxes for my chickens and wondered if anyone might have recommendations for style. I want to build them into the corners on either side of the lower roost, shown in picture. I have 20 chickens but I think I may have at least two roosters, not positive...

    Roost and ladder.

I built the chickens a roost today. I made a ladder but I wondered if it may be too steep for them. Do I just wait to see if they will use it or should I do something?

Cockerels - now what do I do?

It seems pretty sure that I ended out with at least 2 male easter eggers. What should I do? I had intended to heed the advice I had read on here about not having a rooster when you first start out raising chickens. I got the 5 EE's at the local lumber yard with no guarantee of sex. Is it a lot...

    Ameraucana - rooster or pullet

I bought 5 Ameraucana to add to my new flock but did not get any guarantee of sex. With the pictures I've posted, can anyone assist? They will be 6 weeks hatched tomorrow. I wasn't sure what pictures would help identify the most so I can do more, if needed.

    Chicks in the coop!

I don't have as much done as I had hoped but the chicks are moved and they love their space. They fly across, low to the floor and scramble around everywhere. Once already got herself around the plastic, which I put in temporarily until we get a screen door installed and the run built.

    Coop configuration help

We are making our coop out of a 16 x 10 metal storage building. We are adding two windows to catch cross breeze. It has double doors and we're fencing a pretty large area for their run. There is nothing but floor space in there now. I need some ideas on what I should build for the inside. I...

    jerkily shaking head

One of my two week old chicks is sitting off to herself and keeps jerkily shaking her head. She is sitting on the cooler end of the brooder. She seems to be breathing rather quickly, too. Anything I could/should do?

Chicks are growing like ......... chicks?

Although my grandmother had lots of chickens, I don't remember her having baby chicks around. Today is my chicks two week hatchday and I am simply amazed at how fast they are growing and learning.

Advice please, I am down to 12 days......

My chicks will be two weeks old this Monday (March 19) and I currently have the 20 chicks in a baby crib (pictured). They are growing like weeds! I already have concerns that the crib is getting too small for them to explore and thrive. We are moving a large (16x10) shed over by our house to be...

    Newbie from Central Oklahoma

Hello everyone! I got my first chickens 5 days ago, on Tuesday. I went to a hatchery and got 5 Barred Rocks, 5 Black Australorps and 5 Buff Orpingtons. On Friday, I got 5 Ameraucanas from a local lumber yard. Everyone seems healthy and happy. There is a lot of chirping going on but it seems to...
