I'm pretty sure I've got an egg-eater in our midst. Whoever it is, is so good at it that they leave no sign other than a depression in the bedding. They don't eat the marans eggs, but seem to be eating all the other kinds. I want to stick cameras in my nest boxes so I can see who is actually...
Just got this egg out of the nest box. It's got several patches of these tiny little pill-like things, and a few just placed individually. They pick off. Just calcium deposits? Parasite eggs? I've never seen this before.
Last year I hatched a chick from a shipped egg that was a marans-based olive egger. He had very foreshortened legs, although the rest of his body was normal sized, and he got around fine. It almost seemed like achondroplasia. A bit of google-fu tells me it was likely something called the Creeper...
The situation: All but one chicken has completely stopped laying eggs over the course of the past two weeks.
The details:
8 pullets are 9 months old. All but one (an olive egger) has begun laying. Their eggs are all easily distinguishable, and we keep a log, so we know exactly who's laying...
I've hatched and raised out chicks for a few years, and my daughter and I keep diligent logs of egg-laying for 4-H. We've never had this happen, so I don't know if it falls within normal bounds or we should be concerned:
We have a polish x orpington cross that laid for the first time at 34.5...
I tried searching to see if there were any other posts on this and couldn't find one. Just noticed my tolbunt polish 13-week pullet has what appears to be an extra toenail coming out the side of her middle toe. This is fairly new, as I handle them several times a week and haven't seen it before...
Here's Ziggy, a tolbunt polish who is 10 weeks this week. Zero comb or wattle development. Of the two polish we hatched, was definitely the smaller. Any guesses from the polish experts among us? I think she looks like a she right now but could this still turn out male?
Sorry my photos...
This chick just popped two red spots on it's wings. Does this mean its definitely a cockerel? My only other EE from this hatch absolutely is, so it'd be a shame.
Here's its cockerel hatch-mate, for comparison.
At first when this chick started feathering quickly in, in this pattern, I thought it might be a girl. Nothing about it's behaviour says male but now the pattern is looking more male (chopped up, redder areas on wings, dark hackles and light neck/breast). And the real kicker, the comb that...
I have the following 4 week olds that I am confident are males:
Cream Legbar
55 Flowery (2)
Blue copper marans
Blue olive egger (FBCM x bluebar)*
I have the following that are probably males but I'm not positive yet:
Black OE: FBCM x Blue OE above (50% chance deep olive/50% chocolate egg if...
Upfront: I know this chick looks like a cockerel with no context. So what I'm asking is if anyone has had a marans that looked like this at 4 weeks but ended up being a hen.
I've seen alot of people on here say that they've had female marans that tricked them by looking quite masculine at the...
I have several 4 week old Cockerels free to a good home (or to be raised for dinner).
2 - 55 Flowery
1 - Cream Legbar
1 - Olive egger (bluebar x fbcm, looks like a blue marans so far)
Free to pickup ASAP
Presumably some of the non-autosexing chicks will turn out to be males in the coming...
Just wanted to report that I was able to treat my (very, very skittish and difficult-to-handle) Polish for her bumblefoot with zero cutting.
Set up a warm bucket of water with epsom salts, and prepped gloves, neosporin with q-tip, tweezers, vetericyn, duoderm gcq, scissors, 1" vet wrap, a bit...
This is a marans egg that hasn’t been handled or candled previously other than to weigh and check air cell before going into the incubator 7 days ago. Everything else in the incubator is developing nicely but this looks weird.
Shown from both left and right (my hand is over the air cell)...
I would like unbiased opinions on what the condition is of this chicken egg. I have my own opinion, but I want independent verification before I either throw it in an incubator or crack it open.
Is is clear? Scrambled? Incubated or unincubated? Alive? (and if so, roughly what day?) Dead? (and...
I had built myself a water wiggler from ziplocs, water, and packing tape. But I was unsure how accurate the temperature fluctuations would be with plastic/water/large volume/oblong shape as compared to calcium/egg goo/small volume/ovoid shape. I was also displeased that it took up almost two egg...
I’m located in Mercer County, NJ, and am the proud owner of a new Incuview incubator. Unfortunately, my enjoyment of incubating and hatching far outstrips the number of chickens I am able to keep.
Right now, I’m still a rookie so would be willing to do it entirely for free while I master best...
Still prowling for my upcoming hatch.
Does anyone sell all, or most, or even some of these varieties?:
55 Flowery
Ameraucana (Splash, Wheaten, or Lav being ideal)
Isbar
Whiting True Blue
Bonus points if you’re local to Central NJ or Eastern PA, but I will do shipping too.
I'm planning on breaking in my new Incuview and setting a couple dozen eggs on Easter weekend. This puts the hatch day for Mother's Day Weekend, which seems fitting!
Anyone else want to hatch-along with me?
Setting a mix of shipped and local: 55 Flowery, Cream Legbar, Lavender Ameraucana...
I have some welsummer eggs being shipped in mid-April, some oliver eggers that will be shipped at a date to be determined, and I have access to some local blue eggs now. My replacement incubator arrives next week, and I'm dying to get started.
My initial thought was that I'd do all the local...
