Hi I have one of eight hens that has become well disheveled looking For the last three days she hasn’t been able to get into the coop at night. The coop is about 3 ft above ground with a ramp. She is three years old, a little unsteady, has a pale comb, eats and drinks but under weight. Fed them...
Hi haven’t posted in a while What do most do with spent hens? Thought about butchering but herd it can be a wast of time because of the age. Can’t keep them it would stop me from getting fresh hens. I live in town and can only keep 6.
This summer I grew lots of marigolds. The chickens wouldn’t touch them. This fall I picked all the flowers to dry. Has anyone given these to there birds? do I feed just the flower petals, petals and seeds or not at all? Thanks
Hi I have a couple hens that are broody. Today went to look for eggs and one was swaying it’s head back and forth like it was crazy. Looked at its eyes, clear and normal any clues.
Hi one of my Fbcm has become very broody. I have no rooster. She won’t leave the box and has removed her breast feathers To line her nest. Will she eventually give up. I was removing her from the egg box but she just goes right back. I can’t block it off other hens use it. Thanks
So my fbcm’s about two years old are poor egg layers. I have 4 of them they payed there first year stopped for winter have never picked up well since. Occasionally I’ll get an egg. My RIR are egg machines. Is this normal for morans?
I have 7 ,1 1/2-2 year old hens with no signs of illness. They free range frequently in my yard. My dog who also free ranges in the yard was diagnosed with Coccidiosis, possibly cleaning up after the birds. Should I treat the birds for this
ok so I’ve looked at several posts, it seems the consensus is to cage my broody. She has been setting for three days. If I leave her will she actually stay long enough to starve? I have no roo so hatch isn’t possible. Some have said to cool her off like in a bath. Is that necessary? What did...
Hi I have 4 FBCM and 3 RIR hens just over a year old. two of the RIR are being picked on to the point that one has had no feathers on its back for more than a week. Today while free ranging I caught the RIR that was not injured on one of the injured ones. I separated that bird to a different...
I have noticed some of my flock laying on their sides one wing spread in the sun. It’s 90+ degrees there otherwise normal is this common? They don’t appear heat stressed just seem to be enjoying the day.
Hi have 4 FBCM 3 RIR all laying. Occasionally I find a big wet spot in nesting box no shell. Could I have an egg eater, or possibly shell less egg. The FBCM are just over a year old, RIR are about 8 mos. thanks
Well temps dropped well below 0 and windy so I closed dampers on my coop vents for the night. Today one of my hens comb is half gray, was red yesterday. If I open vents will hen be ok it’s a FBCM.
hi I’ve moved 4 hens into a new coop. They spent the last 20 weeks in a large brooder, but inadequate with a low perch. My question is, they now have large perches 2 feet off floor with a ramp. They still sleep on the floor. Will they transition to perches, or keep to the floor? PS they use the...
One of my FBCM pullets comb has gotten much bigger than the other pullets, is this normal or just genetics? And yes I’m sure it’s not a roo hatched April 10th.
Well looks like my little FBCM is going to be white. 11 from the hatch are happy BCMs, looks like 3 or four cockerels. The white one most likely a pullet.
Hi one of my baby’s has a splay leg. I looked at older posts but the pix wouldn’t load for some reason. It has been out of incubator since tues the 10 th. I made a little strap with thin strips of duct tape, covering sticky part. It seems to hold its legs under it, but other chicks are picking...
