    Missing my girls...They're outside tonight

My girls are in their brooder box - outside! We are STILL waiting for our coop to be delivered and now we have 8 week old chickens inside our home. They're OK in the 2' x 3' brooder box during the night, and we've enclosed underneath our trampoline to serve as a daytime run for them. And that's...

    Closing in underneath trampoline?

We have a 14' round trampoline in our backyard & I'm considering putting hardware cloth around the legs and using it as a semi-secure daytime chicken run. Has anyone ever done this? Do you have any tips/hints/suggestions that will make my life easier when I'm attempting this?

Uh Oh. Is Lily a Rooster?

Hi guys - Last week I posted this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=325632 and this picture: And most of you agreed that my four girls were pullets. But today, I noticed a change in Lily's comb and she's looking more like a rooster to me. Here are some outdoor...

    How to find a thread?

Hi there.... What is the easiest way to find a thread once it's disappeared from the "top threads"? Do I just keep scrolling through pages of threads? I've tried searching and that turns up several results - not always the one I need. Any tips? thanks!

    Australian Sub-Forum?

Hello there, I am not sure if this is the right way to do this. If not, I apologize in advance. Please let me know what I should do. I think it would be fantastic if we could set up a separate sub-forum for different countries. I live in Australia, and I'd love to have a place to ask my...

    Do people STEAL eggs?

Do people really steal eggs from your coop? I can't imagine that would be the case. But we have been looking at chicken coops and one design has a lock on the egg collecting door. Has this been a problem for you? Or is the lock there for other reasons - smart predators, perhaps?

    Nighttime - Dark or light?

My chicks are 6 weeks old and fully feathered. Heating is not an issue. If I had a coop, they would be outside in it. But our coop is not built yet - I won't go into the details of that here. It'll be ready in about 2 weeks. My question is this: Can chickens see at all in the dark? When...

Hi guys - I need some help. I posted in the "pictures and stories about my chickens" forum, and it was suggested I come here. There seems to be a cloud of doubt over the gender of my girls. So I hope you guys can set me straight. I have four 5 week old chickens. They are not straight run...

OH BOY! I am falling in love....

I am falling in love with my chickens!! Someone help me!! As I was driving to work today, I was thinking about them. At work I began to wonder if they would get bored while we are away. One our way home, the kids and I were discussing them and sharing funny stories about them. When we got...

    Do Chickens Get Bored?

If chickens are in a large sized run, with a few other chicks, food, and water - do they get bored? What about that week that I have to keep them locked in their coop so they know it's "home" - do they get bored in there? I guess I am just feeling bad because I am at work, my kids are at...

    Her head hangs down?

When one of my young (white leghorn) pullets sleep on the roost, her head hangs down so low, it looks really funny. Is this common?

    Puppy food for chickens?

Okay, I am the first in our group of friends/neighborhood/family to have chickens. Everyone is coming out of the woodwork with old wives tales, hints, tips, and ideas that they heard from their brothers best friends co-worker's uncle that used to have chickens. (you get the idea) I'm getting...

What time of day do they lay?

What time of day do your hens lay their eggs? I've read that you can block the nesting boxes at night so they learn to roost. And you open up the nesting boxes in the morning. And if your hens are free ranging or out in the run, do they just naturally come back inside the coop throughout the...

    Security & chicks playing outside?

We are building our coop, so it's not ready yet. It's going to be a few more weeks till its ready. We want to take our chicks outside to play, but we want to be safe too. We have a large size suburban backyard with a fence around the perimeter. I am SO eager to bring my 4 week old chicks...

4 wk old chicks pecking order?

I am brand new to chickens and I am curious if this is common amongst 4 week old chicks.... We have 4 pullets and they seem to be taking turns roosting in the top spot at night. In our brooder, we've built a ladder type roost for them to practice on. At night, most of the chicks sleep huddled...

3 week old chicks too big for brooder?

First of all - Thank you so much for all the wonderful advice, ideas, and support here in this forum. I've spent hours reading & I love it! I am so glad I found this place! My question is this: I am a first timer (obviously). We have four chicks (3 weeks old) and they seem so cramped in their...
