While cleaning around the coop today, I knocked over a wood pile and out tumbled about 4 mice I think. Holy cow, the chickens went beserk and nailed 2 of them. I'm not sure if they ate them or not. they sure were trying to.
Well I guess thats one more pest that chickens take care of !
I have a feeling my teenager chickens are developing a bad habit. I just completed the nest boxes in their coop now they all cram in there to sleep. 9 chickens are cramming themselves into 2 nest boxes! All are 8 week olds with 2 3 month old Cochins! They look like battery hens for cripes sakes...
Oh man, one of my 6 week old chicks is very sick. I came home and she has string hanging out of her mouth. I tried gently pulling it but it is stuck. And it hurts her when I pull it. She does not look good. The animal clinic said that no one is in to look at her. What should I do.
Here is one of my 6 week old chicks. This is the only one whose comb and waddles look this red. And they are also the biggest by far. This must be a rooster right? And Im pretty sure he is a blue wyndotte?
Its coming along pretty nicely. I think I really blew it out of proportion for what I need though. I only plan on 6 chickens. Coop is 8x6 with 7 foot height transitioning to 5 foot in the back. Im up to about 700 or so. By the time its all said and done with the run ill probably hit close to...
I thought the chicks were starting to get used to people and be pretty friendly but lately they are acting very skittish. They will bound over to check a hand out to see if there is a treat but if no treat, they go running back. Ive been letting them hang out in the yard, and 3 of the six I can...
Good progress I guess this week. All four walls are up.
As you can see I have this built on the side of a hill. The piers came out a little funny. Thats because there are boulders in my yard and I kinda had to work around them. hindsight I wish I would have just used the concrete pyriamid...
I made the chicks a tiny coop. Its 3 feet by 2 feet. and 20 inches high. I insulated 3 sides of it. I laid a piece of foam over 2/3 of the top. Top is just chicken wire. I do have a heat lamp dangling over the top. But It got down to 35 last night and they were fine. Course when I stuck my hand...
My chicks are 4 weeks old or so. Maybe older. When I look at my chicks compared to what other 4 week old chicks look like mine seem alot more developed. They are pretty big and well feathered. They have destroyed the downstairs bathroom where I have been keeping them , I dont have a garage...
Im starting out with a 8X4 floor. Im going to have 6 or 8 chickens. How tall do I need to make the coop? I was thinking big enough for me to stand in there, but it would be better for the birds in the winter time to have a smaller space that would be easier for them to keep warm. Not to mention...
Well we hit just over 50 degrees and had some sun! Figured maybe Id let the 4 week old chick stretch their legs. They had lots of fun. I think we were out there for 2 hours. The chicks Scratched, pecked, ran, chirped and seemed to be finding lots of stuff to eat. Then ended the day with...
I got my foundation tubes in this weekend. Whew! that was hard digging. what they are are 6" sonotubes filled with concrete. On top of those i build my floor. Im not really sure what to make though. My floor dimensions are 4X8. I dont think Ill make a fully walk in coop. Maybe Ill make it 5-6...
Would anybody mind following this link and guessing what I have gender wise with these chicks? Pics were taken at about 3.5 weeks https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=3986927#p3986927
I did a search on here about chicks eating pine shavings and seams to be not a big deal but Im still concerned. Its driving me nuts. The birds are getting fed feed and treats on a non stop basis but they still eat shavings. I cant imagine that is good for them. Or why they even do it. Some...
What are these chickens gonna do up here in the winter, My summer is pretty short. The place that I picked my chicks up just had them in a coop and a little area outside that was shielded from the snow fall. The guy said they would tolerate some pretty bad cold. What kind of temp do I need to...
Good grief! These chicks poop as often as I blink! Ive had parrots before and they went pretty often but not like these chicks. I brought mine upstairs to the hardwood floor (dont tell my wife!) to give them treats and get used to coming when I call them. Pretty much the whole time I had them up...
Here is Delialah
And Pecker I think he is a roo, he has comb and waddle development
Blackie, another possible roo, waddle and comb already showing and a big boy at that. he is the biggest of the bunch. He is pretty freindly too. he flys up to the top of the brooder to greet me everytime and...
Hello all. I have 2 goals for my flock. 1. to be pets and 2. lay eggs. Right now the chicks seem to be pretty skittish around me. They are fine till I put my hands in their box and then they kind of scatter to the corners. Once I gently pick one up they seem to relax in my hand though. But once...
Picked up my first chicks today. I have no Idea what sex they are though. I got 6. I was told that they are wydonnettes and wydonnett mixes. But the guy wasnt sure about that either. Oh well Its alaska and Farm type animals arent really what we do. They are 3 and half weeks old and seem very...
