I lost my barred rock today due to sour crop, I think. The crop felt like a water balloon. This was her third day like this and after reading several posts on the topic I tried massaging her crop while holding her head down. She started vomiting right away, mostly cloudy water like. We did this...
One of my girls layed a wrinkled egg today. The shell is nice and hard, so I don't think it's a calcium problem. They were locked up inside the laying area of their coop last night because it went down to 27 degrees. They hate being "cooped up" like that, maybe it's stress related. Should I be...
My babies are 6 weeks old now and outside in the coop. We have fresh sweet corn in the garden that is ready to pick. Is it safe to give the girls fresh sweet corn and other scraps or should we stick to the grower feed for now? They do have grit available and they are getting plenty of bugs now...
O.K. lets see a show of hand for anyone that'a tired of dumping out the chicks waterer because it's full of shavings!!!!
O.M.G I swear, I have to do it every 30 minutes or so! Do they ever stop scratching?
I'm just venting, I know, I know, it's all part of the fun.

My chicks are 2 weeks old now. Tonight I was outside and spotted a small caterpillar on my apple tree. It was only about a quarter of an inch long, and I couldn't resist.
I dropped it into the brooder with my babies. One of my Barred Rocks swallowed it down. Now about an hour later when she lays...

: (I'm looking to buy my first birds and I had my heart set on Buff Orpingtons. I mentioned it to my local feed store owner today and he said they are not good layers, but great for meat. I'm going to raise chickens for the eggs, and I live in Florida. Is this not the bird for me?

The coop plans that I purchased calls for 1x1 welded wire but I can't find 1x1 welded wire. I do see 1x1 hardware cloth. Could this the same thing?
I pictured "welded wire" much thicker. I do have predators here in Florida.

I'm getting ready to build my first brooder box. A book that I have says to make a wire floor so that the chicks can grip it with their feet and their dropping can fall through.
I've been watching videos on YouTube and everyone either had wood shavings, newspaper, or paper towels over shavings...
When the chicks first arrive I'm told they need a heat lamp to keep them warm. And I'm told that they need this lamp until all of their feathers are in.
Does this mean the lamp needs to be on 24/7 ? Is there a difference between the red bulbs and white , other than color?

The hatchery says to start all chicks on a 20% medicated Chick starter.
My question is..... Is there a non medicated started feed? Or is all chick starter feed medicated? Does the medicated feed have anything to do with the Merek Vaccination?
Thanks for all your help
David
The hatchery offers to vaccinate the chicks with a Marek Vaccination. Is there a reason one whould not want the chicks vaccinated? I havn't bought my chicks yet, but for as little as .17 cents per chick, it seems to be a no brainer. Can someone explain this to me please?
Thanks
David
If you raise your chicks and move them to an enclosed coop where they remain all the time, will they return to the coop in the evening if they are let out to roam free? And if so how old should they be before letting them out?
As you can tell I don't have any birds yet. I'm in the process of...
Can anyone tell me what breeds of chickens do well in Florida? I'm interested in the Buff Orpingtons but I don't know if the Florida heat is going to be a problem.
Thanks
