Molting bird losing weight, loose poop

My gold laced Polish is going through her first molt, ahead of the other three in the flock. Lost her tail and primaries but there are pin feathers coming back in, but when I picked her up to check on them today I was startled by how much weight she's lost. She is not racing to get treats like...

    Fowl pox just getting started?

So I was taking a pic of my Golden Comet Xena today and noticed these small pustules. They look like what happens to me when I get bit by fire ants. One of my other hens, a Lakenvelder, also has these but the Polish girls don't appear to. Thoughts/recommendations? The coop is about to get a...

    Egg Trend?

My red sex-link has been a champion egg layer, every day since her first egg on August 31. No changes in environment, she's the top hen in the flock and they were all raised together and usually get along great, my other three girls are all laying. They are just a couple of weeks shy of a year...

White feathers on gold laced Polish

Hi, does anyone know why my gold laced polish would start getting white tips on the ends of some of her crest feathers? It's like she had a fright and her hair went gray!

    Pullet stopped laying?

Hi, So my Lakenvelder has now appeared to stop laying altogether? She started in September, so not that long ago, and was good for an egg every other day, most recently NOT in the nesting box, and now appears to have stopped altogether. They are in a 64' run, only four chickens, plus the 32'...

In and Out of the Nest box

Hi, two of my four pullets are laying, the Golden Comet/RSL and the Lakenvelder. The two Polish girls are not even close, based on their lack of wattles and the narrowness of their pelvic bones. The RSL has been a daily layer since August 30 and lays in one of the two nest boxes every morning...

First one to lay now boss chicken?

So my small flock of four pullets all came at the same time as chicks. I have a Golden Comet, Lakenvelder, and two Polish. The Comet and Lakenvelder are laying, neither of the Polish girls are even close yet. So I've noticed that the Comet (who was first to lay) is becoming quite the big...

    Pullet #2 started laying today!

My Lakevelder pullet laid her first egg today! I found it on the ground in the run. She has been poking around the nesting box and I knew she was close - she must have been taken by surprise. It's small and pinkish! Shown are her egg, the brown egg is from my Golden Comet who's been laying a...

    nippiness nipped in the bud!

As a first time chicken mom, and someone who has never been fond of birds as pets, I can't believe how much I'm enjoying these girls! And amazed at how smart and personable they are. Tonight I brought blueberries and some scratch out to the run. My Golden Comet Xena ADORES blueberries and is a...

    SOOOO EGGSCITING!

Sorry I couldn't help myself - I got my first egg today! A perfectly formed, beautiful egg laid IN the nesting box by my Xena. It's substantial - I haven't opened it yet - but it doesn't feel like a fairy egg. She's a red/brown sex-link (golden comet maybe?) and the first hen in my first...

    Anticipation! They're making me wait...

Not really making me wait because they're still young, but the girls are getting ready to lay! I have a brown sex link pullet whose comb and wattles are reddening up and VERY interested in the nesting boxes, and the Lakenvelder is also reddening up a bit and also very curious about the nesting...

Does it really matter where they sleep?

New chicken mom here...flock of four hens, two Polish crested one red sex link, one silver Lakenvelder. They're about 3.5 months old and moved into their spacious combo coop/run about 3 weeks ago. The "coop" part is actually open entirely to the run because I'm in S Fla and worry more about...

    My Silver Lakenvelder

This is Arya, who I'm pretty sure is a Silver Lakenvelder thanks to a suggestion from someone here on BYC. She is smaller than the others, quick, and extremely chatty with me. She's not super fond of being held or petted but will sit on my lap and tell me all about her day. She also likes to...

    Beards

When do beards start showing up on young birds? I think my white polish is a bearded one, she seems to be getting fluffy feathers around her beak. My gold laced black Polish is very "clean-shaven", no sign of any extra feathers. They are about 12 weeks old.

    Coop Decor

So I decided that the inside of the coop/run needed some decor suitable for teenage girl chickens. So I added a rooster pinup calendar. Xena enjoyed checking out the handsome fellow pictured and I cracked myself up making the pinup!

    Hot weather and egg laying

Hello, My girls are still several weeks away from laying, but they're in their combined coop/run and I'm building the nest boxes this weekend. I'm in hot hot hot Florida, and they are already pretty hot in there despite it being shaded and a fan going. My neighbor keeps his chickens in a dog...

new shoes and an egg apron!

Since someone else posted a crocheted chicken hat, I guess this is the best place to post a pic of my new chicken shoes (to wear in the coop/run) and an apron made for me by my sister. It has four egg pockets (I have four very young hens so those won't be used for a while!), a cell phone pocket...

    hens right?

I got my girls from a hatchery that claims 90% sexing accuracy. They look like hens (to me) but I guess now they're starting to develop their wattles. They're around 8 weeks old I think.
