I'm going to pick up an automatic door, I haven't selected one yet. But I live in New England and I'm wondering if ice buildup on the door tracks is an issue for anyone. Thoughts on whether spraying it with something like wd-40 would help prevent that?
I have two hens. White hen started brooding, was kicked off the nest by Grey hen, so she set up another nest. There's about 20 eggs under Grey, 4 hatched about 3 days ago, another hatched today and was booted out of the nest (or let to tumble away from it, either way Grey didn't care for it.)...
S/he is perfectly fine so far, just sleepy in the picture. We did a warm water soak to keep the membrane pliable, it's had some water with nutridrench. Napping now. Do I do anything about this? I would like to trim that membrane, will the rest resolve or is this going to go badly? It does have a...
My brahma had a very messy back end today and I gave her a bath. I need to keep her contained so I can make sure it wasn’t from a stuck egg, so I was just going to put her in a large cage outside in the shade with food and water. It’s 80 degrees out. Think it’s ok to just put her out damp?
I was given a Pekin girl today with scabs all over the bottoms of her feet. A friend rescued ducks from an neglectful situation, and now she’s here. The scabs don’t seem very swollen, but they do smell awful.
I have amoxicillin on hand (from our vet, it was for another pekin who didn’t need...
My chickens live in a big barn stall. I’ve done the deep litter method since the beginning of autumn. Last year deep litter worked out great, but this year I must’ve done something wrong, because underneath the first few inches, there’s a very strong ammonia smell. My local ag store told me to...
Last spring I bought 4 "sexed" day old chicks that turned out to ALL be roos. A hen hatched out two more babies, got two more roos. Finding homes for them took well into the summer and meant hours and hours of driving all over the place to their new homes.
BUT. NOW.
One of my hens hatched a...
A 3 month old pullet was attacked by older hens on 12/31. I wasn’t there to see it, but I’ve seen older hens drive her away from the food in the past, and her mama bird was found dead in the yard. I’m fairly certain the other hens are responsible. No animal tracks in the snow, no one missing...
My youngest hen hatched a dozen chicks in the middle of October. We are in southern Maine and the weather has been pretty chilly the whole time. Until recently, mother hen has been great about taking care of all of the babies. Very attentive. At night, they roost in a pet carrier, to help trap...
There are a lot of details to this and they all are pertinent, so I'll try to keep it simple! Sorry if it's a long read.
Mama bird hatched 13 babies outside the coop yesterday. They're now in an outdoor brooder on my back porch, 4x4x2' with an open corner in the top so mom can hop in and out if...
I have a 3 week old CCX who has hardly grown at all. I've had him since day 2, he looks less than a week old.
He's lethargic. Stands still or lays down, eats and drinks just enough to stay alive. Peeps almost nonstop. No symptoms in the other 40 birds.
He's isolated indoors, temperate...
I have a one year old lavender orpington hen who was sick with some mystery Illness about two weeks ago. 3 days in the house, and she was fine.
I just found her again today, with the same symptoms (lethargic, pale comb, not eating or drinking.) She's indoors again.
None of my other chickens...
What do you do when your hen is doing all the normal functional things but still seems off? Not lethargic, exactly, but noticeably quiet and low-key? She hid for the first time ever the other day. (Perched, not on a nest, just sitting in the dark.)
No fluttering or balancing when I pick her up...
We have a house chicken. Last night, for the first time, one of the dogs tried to play with her and hurt her. The dog didn't bite, but she did that excited feet thing that dogs do and and it looked like she stepped on her neck.
I can't tell a break from a sprain. Ms. Hen is moving, has control...
Update 11/25 a.m.: if my count is right, it's been a week since her injury. I'll share what I'm doing and what I've learned.
Per the poultry vet who was kind enough to talk to me, blue kote is NOT recommended for an injury like this. It actually stings, which is ok on small injuries but would...
I have a pair of lavender-buff orpington crosses that were hatched together. One has tail feathers, one does not. I assume they're different sexes, but who is who?
I also have a lavender orp and an Easter egger who are about a week apart in age, one with tail feathers and one with a fluffy...
