    Black Ameraucana chicks

I got my chicks last week, and hopefully all blue egg layers!! The three chipmunks are Cream legbars and the two little penguins should be black Ameraucanas. What do you think?

    Thanksgiving treats

I made a little feast for my flock today... my Sapphires immediately gobbled up all the hard boiled egg bits. The Marans ate a few bites of apple and oatmeal, and then finally the Faverolles shyly investigated. My Braham stayed away, since she would rather go eat clovers and worms. Well, Happy...

    Slight cross beak

One of my BCM has cross beak which I didn't notice until she was about 2 months old. She is 5 months old now and I'm not sure if I need to trim her beak. I've not dealt with this issue before and I'm wondering if a nail file would suffice, since it's not too extremely crossed? Also, she hasn't...

This breed is new to me, and I only got them last week. Can you tell if they are female this early? Here they are in their outdoor "playpen". Thank you for your advice!

    First foot issue

I have a 2.5 year old Faverolles hen that has a swollen bulge in between her toes. The bottom of her foot seems fine. This is my first time seeing this problem. My other hens are all fine. Any advice?

    Light brahma & blue mix?

These are my four chicks I bought at TS in early June. Two are light brahma and two are "blue plymouth rock", but I read on another thread that TS doesn't always label correctly. So what breed would the blue ones be? Also, I'm assuming I have to wait a few more weeks to id the gender, correct...

4 chicks ready to move outside

My chicks are almost 5 weeks old and seem ready to join my 3 hens outside. They have been seeing each other for about an hour each day, but haven't been together. Should I introduce them in the run or in the coop? I know they will need hiding spaces and separate food/water, but what else should...

    Polish question

My chicks are about 10 weeks old now. My polish hen (?) had a full head of feathers, but now it seems that more are coming in and seems to be "thinning" in the back. Her voice is changing (not cluck, but more of a crow/croak). So do I actually have a roo?

    Need advice on young roosters

If I have three roos and four pullets... how do I decide which two to rehome? (or rename "dinner" like my brother has done) Do I keep the dominant one? When do I have to decide? They are getting along for now... just the usual chest bumps and hackle raising, but no serious battles. Thanks in...

    Buckeye pullets?

I'm trying to figure out how many of my 7 chickens are roosters. The Salmon Faverolles are easy, I think... because 2 have black feathers. But here are the two Buckeyes... what do you think? One has slightly curved tail feathers.

    Edges of the run

The run we built is 8x16 and the wire goes out about 4" at the bottom. Over that bottom edge, I have added crushed gravel and larger stones. Under the door I used even larger slate and paver pieces. Will this be enough to keep out digging predators, or do I need to add wire to the inside floor...

    Questions about DIY feeder

I'm sure this has been discussed many, many times... so forgive me. Has anyone used this product? (STOLTCO 2pcs DIY Porthole Chicken Feeder-on Amazon) I was thinking of using it with a bucket or tote. Would 2 openings be enough for 7 chickens? Also, doesn't the food go stale during humid...

    Hello from Central Virginia

Hi all, I am in the Richmond area and I have 7 chickens hatched on April 4th. I'm fairly certain that two are roosters, but I'm not yet sure about the others. The breeds I have are Buckeye, Dark Brahama, Salmon Faverolles, and one Polish. It's so much fun getting to know their personalities...
