    And then there were 4

It has been a rough fall for my flock. I had 17 in September but after some were rehomed, one had to be put down, and a stray dog managed to squeeze through the coop door and killed some, including my first and favorite,--the "queen" of the flock--the remaining four are struggling. My rooster...

    Breed help?

I rescued 2 chicks, and while I was able to identify one as a sapphire gem, I cannot figure this one out! He or she has black legs mixed with bright yellow and a yellow dot on both sides of the head near the eyes (which is a recent discovery, the pic below doesn't show it) Any ideas?

    Egg colors

I have a White Crested Black Polish hen, a Columbian Wyandotte hen, and a Sapphire Gem hen. (Just those 3, no rooster). I find 1-3 eggs daily, but they all appear to be the same size and pale tan color! Whose is whose?

    Yay! A friend for JT

After my flock of 3 was reduced to 1, I went on a search to find a friend for poor JT, my Polish hen. A nice lady has offered the pick of the flock! ❤ But how do I pick the right one? JT's sisters were a Cochin and a Rhode Island red. This lady has "Wyandottes, Australorps, ISA brown, Rhode...

    Polite, thennnnn...not so much

Ok, so some of you have assured me that my rooster is a good flock master (thank you for that!). Another question: why will my rooster avoid me like the plague, "play" with my dog, and full out attack my husband?

    Such a polite guy...?

My strong-willed rooster will not eat out of my hand, although his "ladies" will. I'm always trying to gain his trust, so this morning I fed them mealworms as a nice treat. He would take one, then drop it, keeping his beak close to it and cluck until one of the ladies ate it. He did this 4 or 5...

    Photo bomb!

While trying to take a picture of my rooster, Squab, my quirky little Cochin hen, Baby, just had to see what was up. Below is the picture I wanted to take, and the other is the "Whatcha doin?" Picture.

Hello from the Baker Nut Hut and Chicken Ranch

I'm Kerri Baker and I'm absolutely loving my backyard chickens! I live in a rough Sioux City neighborhood, but thanks to a stroke of luck, my husband and I have just little over half an acre which we are slowly making into a mini-farm. This is the first time in...um, several years since I've had...
